COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
BOX-COUCH.
To all whom it may concern:
provide an improved box couch having dust-proof cover se arate and independent from the mattress supporting means of the box, but which, however, is operated simultaneously with the shifting of such mattress supporting means, and which latter is so supported that it may be shifted without the necessity of moving the structure from the wall, and to furnish these improvements in a comparatively simple and inexpensive structure.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification,'Figure 1 is an end view of this improved box couch, with the shiftable mattress supporting frame and box cover lifted; Fig. 2 is an endview showing the parts closed on top of the box or storage receptacle; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the structure partly open; and Fig. 4 is a top view of one end of the structure with parts broken away.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figuresto the thicknessof the stuffed mattress, is an upright arm or bracket5 for pivotally supporting the mattress carry ng frame 6,wh1ch is shown compr1s1ng a pair of end members or frames 7 and 8 shown herein of angle ,formation and comprising a pair of spaced ,apart cross or horizontal bars 9 and 10 connected at their ends, as at 11 and 19., the latter form of connection being preferably a curved one. The cross bars 10 of the end frames are connected by a series of metallic strips or bars 13 carrying in the present instance a series of spirals 14 'for supporting the stuffed mattress 15 which in practice will usually be tied or otherwise secured to the mattress frame so'as to be lifted therewith. The storage receptacle is provided with a hinged cover 16 linked by a pair of links 17 to the swinging mattress supporting frame, which, with its stuffed mat-tress, comprises a couch or bed section. For facilitating the movement of the swinging. bed section coil springs 20 are provided, one at each end of the structure, and each having one end secured adjacent'to the rear of the mattress supporting frame and its opposite end secured to the end of the box, whereby the lifting of the bed section ismade easier. The cover 16 is provided with a flange 21 around its edge to overlap the body of the box in order to make the same dust proof.
From the foregoing it will be observed. that the closure for the box is separate and independent of the mattress supporting frame and is held tightly closed upon the box by the weight of the mattress and its supporting frame when in the form of a couch, thus providing a dust-proof receptacle which could even be made air-tight if desired, so that it will be moth-proof as well as dust-proof.
It is, of course, to be understood, that the various details may be more or less meldified without departing from the spirit or scope of this improvement. For instance,
some other form of stuffed mattress sup porting metallic fabric might be used in place of the spirals if preferred.
when it is raised into an upright positionthe stuffed mattress will not project beyond the rear edge of the box'and consequently JOSEPH LUPPINO, OF RIDGE-WOOD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO LUPPINO DAVENPORT Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 21, 1911,
the latter may be opened without moving the couch from the wall, which 1s, of course,
a desirable feature. Moreover, by'pivoting the swinging section in the manner shown it permits the weight of the major part of the couch section to rest upon the cover when the structure is in the form of a couch and thus holds the lid or cover tightly closed,
and as at this time the metallic strips carry- I ing the spirals rest firmly uponthe lid or" {cover it follows that there is no fleXure of these strips and consequently weight upon the couch will not collapse or pull the end frames toward each other, so that the use of side bars may be entirely done away with when the mattress supporting frame is made up of spirals in the manner shown.
From the foregoing it will also be observed that the structure is not only a dustproof one, but that all the moving parts within the box.
I claim as my invention: 1. A box couch comprising a box forming a. storage receptacle, a swinging cover hinged to the box and forming a top therefor, a swinging mattress supporting frame pivotally secured to said box independently of the cover, and a connecting member having a fixed point of attachment to the mattress frame and the cover whereby both the mattress frame and the cover may be shifted -mattress to be raised to a perpendicular po sition without the necessity of moving the box from the wall, a spring or springs connected to the mattress frame and the box ex teriorly of the box for facilitating the sWinging of the mattress frame, and a connecting member having a fixed point of attachment to the mattress frame and the cover whereby both the mattress frame and the cover may be simultaneously shifted in the same direction to an upright position to permit access to the box.
