To all whom t may concern,.-

Be it known that I, MAURICE LANGHORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at *Chicago, Cook county, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bedstead, Lounge, Sofa, &c. and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

v This invention relates to improvements in folding bedsteads, particularly to that class known as sofa or wardrobe bedsteads, and to improve my device for which Patent No. 426,026 was issued to me April 22, 1890.

The object of the invention is to furnish a bedstead which is simple and cheap in construction and at the same time strong and durable, which can be readily and quickly folded for transportation from one place to another, having the form of a chest or trunk, and'is adapted to hold the bedclothes or other ar# ticles which it may be found desirable to place therein.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of the device in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of Fig. l when folded or closed up. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of Fig. l when in position with the extension for two persons to lie upon it. Fig. el. is a perspective view of the device when folded or closed up. Fig. 5 is an interior view of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a view of the end of G with groove and bolt.

A and a represent the main frame of the device.

B, h, and b' represent the lid or cover made in sections and hinged together.

C is seat upon which mattress or cushion is placed.

C represents the extension of seat when a wider bed is wanted. G represents part of main frame A, which is hinged onto A and provided with slotted bolts J to secure it to sides cd when closed up.

II h h represent a support and guiding-bar permanently fixed to insides of a' and extending about one inch inwardly to guide and support the sectional folding top B b b', so as to simplify and modify the construction of the device by doing away with support hooks and bars.

J represents bolt which fastens G to ends a of main frame A when extension C is not in use or sofa is closed up.

The operation is as follows: The cover B b b is lifted, the section b being raised to a vertical position upon the back of the main frame A. The section B then drops down upon the support and guiding-bar h which conducts it to the seat C and the section b is folded in between the section B and the main frame. If itis desired to use lounge for two persons, the bolts J are drawn, and G, the hinged part of main frame A, is allowed to drop down. Then the seat C is raised to a vertical position, the legs are pulled out and C is allowed to swing out on its hinges and C and C come downto a horizontal position, forming a bed of the usual length and width. The part of main frame G dropping down entirely away from seat C and C gives a free and easy movement to the bed in the center and does away with the objectionable ridge in the middle of the bed common to all folding sofas and permits access to the interior without raising seat.

The operation to close lounge is as follows: The seat C and C is'raised to a vertical position, the legs are pushed in, and C is allowed to swing downward to side of C, where it is secured bya button or screw. Then both C and C are allowed to drop to a horizontal position. Gis then raised up and secured by the bolts J to ends cd. The sectional folding lid or cover B b o is drawn outward upon the guiding-bar h', upon which it is raised to h, the iiat top of support and guiding-bar. Then b is unfolded and lid is drawn out until b reaches I-I, the perpendicular part of support and guidingbar, which conducts b to part G of main frame and brings B down upon 72', its intended support.

In making the lounges under my Patent No. 426,026 it was found complicated to have detachable support hooks and bars which were sometimes misplaced when wanted, and this support and guiding-bar H h h fixed to ends of lounge is always in place, and in transporting the lounge as formerly made it Was found when lounge was turned on its back, as was frequently the case, detachable support-hooks allowed the lid or top to sag down and become loose, which is impossible in this construction, as H holds b securely in position and holds B firmly down upon its support z.

One great objection heretofore in folding sofas has been the ridge in the center. This is entirel)T overcome by the improvement I have herein shown, the Whole being exceedingly simple and very quickly operated.

Having thus fully described my invention, What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination of the frame, the sectional cover hinged thereto at one side, and the guiding and supporting rails secured to the ends of the frame, said rails having a straight portion to support the cover in place, and a curved portion to guide and support the cover in its movement; substantially as described.

2. The combination of the frame,the hinge d cover, the main seat supported in the frame, and the extension seat hinged to the outer edge of the main seat and adapted to fold thereunder when not in use; a portion of the front Wall of the frame below the adjacent hinged rails being removable, so as to leave the extended bed elastic along said hinged rails When in use, substantially as described.

The combination of the frame, the main seat supported thereon below the upper edge of said frame, the extension seat hinged to the outer edge of said main seat and adapted to fold within the frame when not in use, and

the section G of the side of the frame, said section being hinged and adapted to be 10W- ered to permit the extension seat to form a level continuation of the main seat; substantially as described.

4. The combination with the frame A, of the hinged sectional cover B, the supporting and guiding rails l-I, h, h', fixed to the ends of the frame and adapted to guide the cover in :its movement and support it in place; substantially as described.

5. The combination with the frame A, of the hinged sectional cover B, the supporting and guiding rails lvl, 7L, 7L', and the hinged extension seat- C mounted in the frame A for supporting a mattress or cushion; substantially as described.

6. The combination with the frame A, oi' the hinged sectional cover B, supporting and guiding rails ll, 7L, 7U, the hinged extension L' with its supports, and the hinged section G of the frame A i'or the purpose of lowering the front of the frame; substantially as described.

7. The combination of the frame, the cover hinged thereto at one side and consisting of sections one of Which forms a portion of the front wall when the cover is closed, and guides or abutments attached to the ends of the frame and against which said Afront Wall section is adapted to bear; substantially as described..
