Application-mednecember 30, 1909. Serial No. 535,592.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER R. WARREN, a citizen of the United States residin at Lowell, county of Middlesex, State of assachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a s eciication, reference being had therein to tie accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to card board boxes intended to contain confectionery and like A articles.
The particular object of my invention is to construct a pasteboard box or container in such a form that when the articles contained therein have been removed the said box may be used as a toy for children. With this object in view I form certain portions of the box of more than one thickness of material and print upon one side of the box a portion of the representation. of the to which the box is to represent when emptie The remaining portions of the gure are printed upon iaps which are ordinarily hinged to the said face ofthe said box and are died out from the outer thickness of the material of which the box is formed. These ilaps when bent outwardly from their normal position so that they lie in thev plane of the front face of the box or in a plane parallel thereto, complete the outline of the object which the box represents. The material is chosen to have suiiicient stiffness so that if desired the box may be supported -on the said Haps as upon legs. I alsocontemplate making these boxes or toys in series representing dierent but related objects, as for instance, a locomotive and train of cars or a string of canal boats so that a child may obtain the entire series by successive pur- VVith this in view, I contemplate forming male and female connecting means on the proxima-te ends of the lboxes f 'orm. ying the series so that the boxes successively purchased may be linked together.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description taken in connection with. the vaccompanying drawings, and the novel features are pointed out and clearly defined in the claim at the close of this s ecification.
In 't e drawings,-Figure 1 is a front view of two boxes embodying my invention and printed and constructed to represent a locomotive and a passenger car, said boxes being in their normal condition..- Fig. 2 shows shown the front face of the box.
the same boxes with the flaps opened. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of said locomotive and car. Fig. 4 is an end view of the front end of the passenger car. Fig. 5 is an end view of thev rear end of the locomotive. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the front end of the locomotive. Fig. 7 is a. section on line 7 -7 of Fig. 1. 8 is a plan view of the blank emloyed in the production of the locomotive.
n this figure the outline together with the creases and cuts formed in the blank are shown but the printing is omitted for the sake of clearness.
Referring now to the embodiment of my invention sho-wn in the drawings: at A is On this front face is printed as much of the icture of the locomotive as ispermitted y the s ace. This is plainly shown in Fi 1.
onnected with the upper line of the ont face A is the outer top B, which when the box is made up forms the outsidelayer of the material. At C is shown the outside layer of material ofthe bottom, the back is indicated at D, the inside layer of the top at E, the inside layer of the front at F, the inside layer of the bottom at G and the gluing strip at H. Said parts are separated from each other by creases or scored lines as indicated by dash lines in Fig.v 8. The arrangements of these arts when the box is made up may be seen rom Fig. 7, which is a sectional View.
The left hand end of the box is closed by end flaps I and J attached respectively to the outer top B and outer bottom C and by the end K attached to the front face A.
Said'end K is provided with a tuckL in the usual manner. The right hand end of the box is closed by the end M and tuck N, or in vany other convenient manner.
The head light, rounded end of the boiler, and cow-catcher are formed from aps at'- tached to the adjacent edge of the front face A being died or otherwise cut out to have an outline corresponding to the outline of the respective part-s of the locomotive which .they represent. Said flaps are indicated at O in the drawin s.
The portions of the Awheels which fall outside the limits of the front face A of the box are cut out of the adjacent portions of the outer layer C of the bottom ofthe box. In like manner such portions of the locomotive as project above the upper edge but lying in a of the Abox are cut lfrom ,the outside layerA Blof the top ofthe box. These portions are,
in the embodiment of the invention illus trated in the' drawings, the upper ortlon of the smoke stack, steam dome, san box and cab and are marked Q, in the drawings. All
,of said projecting portions are printed to represent the corresponding parts of the 'nox Vthicknesses of card board 1s readily made in the manner shown, that is, by 4forming the box sothat ortions overlap. In the box shown in the awin theboard composing the box isglued at t e point when the stripI H comes in contact wlth the rearwall D and the outer and inner layers composing the to are luedA together along the rear edge, t us ho ding the parts securely Without interfering with the o ening of the flaps.
The rear wall of thel vided with a V-shaped coupling member S cut from the rear end K and bent to stand in a substantially horizontal position as shown. The front end of the car is provided with a hook T similarly constructed Plane at rightangles to, that of thev plane o the other coupling member S. Said coupling members may be ornamented with the representation of a coupling if desired.' It will be seen that the male member T engages the female member S and 'thereby secures the two boxes togrelher after the manner of a train of cars.
e rear end of the car is provided with a female couplin member like that on the rear end of the icomotive, thereby affording means for connecting another car to the rear end of the train.
The car is constructed similarly to the enocomotive is pronot require a detailed descripthe case may be, and in the case of the lia-ps i Ov may be folded under the end M for bet-y ter rotection. When the child, into Whose han the box comes, has removed the con- `tents of the box he can lift up the fla s into the plane of the front face of the box t ereby giving the box the appearance of the object, the representation of which is printed on it.
The material of which'the box 1s made is ordinarilyof lsuiiicient strength and stiffness so that the box may be supported on the flaps cut from the bottom as upon legs. If the child has morev thanone box of a series as for instance, the engine and car, he may connect them by means of the coupling arrangement "with Which they are provlded. This tends to induce the child to buy others of the series and assists greatly the sale of the goods.
I find that my improved box provides a cheap and attractive toy which costs about the same as the Ordinar' card board box, but which is much more sa able by reason of the fact that the' child gets an attractive toy which would otherwise' cost much more.
'What I claim is r The combination with a folding box Ihaving printed on one side thereof the representation of an .object a-nd having flaps hinged to the edges of said side and printed with vrepresentations'of other portions of v said object, of a second box similarly printed to represent an object, and having representations of projecting' ortions printed upon flapshinged to the e ges of a -side thereof,
one of said boxes havino a male coupling.
member and the othenof said boxes having a female coupling member whereby the two boxes may be mechanically connected.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature,-
in presence'of two witnesses. v e PETER R. WARREN.
