Description

C. P.' SNOW.
Lamp Extinguisher.
Patented Nov. 30', 1869 To all whom it may concern:
, "ignited gtatee cIIaRLEs P. Show, or FREEPORT, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 97,453, dated November 30, 1869.
LAMP-TRIMMER AND EXTINGUISHER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, CHARLES l. Sxow, of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson, and State of Illinois,
have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lamp-Trimmer and Extinguisher-{and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the in the construction and novel arrangement ofdevices,
whereby the wick, when chan'ed, may be readily trimmed, without removing the chimney, and, if necessary, extinguished.
' The letter A, of the drawings, designates an ordinary burner. v
' B, a springing plate; attached at its lower end securely to the outside of the wick-tube, and having its upper end bent at right angles toward the top of the wick-tube, terminating iua cutting-edge sulficiently broad to engage the whole length of the wick. This edge may be parallel to the long side of the wick, or slightly convergent. lireither case it will readily remove the charred portion. A
nesses.
C is the operating-lever, the handle of which extends out from under the edge of the. lower plate of the burner, so that, being below the chimney, it may be readily reached.
The lever G passing upward, and forming an elbow, is attached to the plate B just below the bend.
By turning the lever G with a quick movement, the cutting-edge of the plate B takes off the charred por tion of the wick, and, the pressure of the fingers being 7 removed, springs back immediately without extinguishing the flame. When it is desired to put the light out, the ledge b of the plate B is kept-for a few seconds over the wick.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Tllelamp-trimmer and extinguisher herein described, having springing plate B, with cutting-ledge -b' and levers O, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name, in the presence of two wit- GHARLES I. SNOiV.
