' 'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. WARFIELID, or Los ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, AssIGNoR or ONE-FOURTH T0 0. R. HARRIs, OF Los ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
EDUCATIONAL DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1910.
v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. WARFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Educational Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in educational devices, and its object is to provide means whereby a long or short column of figures may be exposed at the will of the operator for the purpose of teaching addition.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a ertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a cross section.
A, represents a cylindrical body which can be constructed of any'suitable material, but preferably made of tin and provided at the upper end with an opening, 1. elongated slot, 2, is formed along one side of the cylindrical body, and flanges, 3, 3, are formed along the opening. The slide, 4, has flanges, 5, thereon, which are adapted to engage the flanges, 3, on the cylindrical body to permit the slide to move vertically on the cyllndrical body. A handle, 6, is formed on the slide for operating the slide. The cylindrical body, B, is received within the cylindrical body, A, and is provided with a shank, 7, which is adapted to be received through the opening, 1, at the upper end of the body, A. The shank, 7, is bent down and upon the body A, for holding the member, B, in position. The shank, 7, forms a loose connection between the members, A,'
and, B, and permits the member, B, to rotate within the member, A. On the outer surface of the member B, columns of figures, 8, are formed, which can be applied to the member, B, in any suitable manner. The lower edge is "bent at right angles and is adapted to engage the inner surface of the member, A, whereby the member, B, is centrally held within the member, A, thereby preventing the columns of figures from coming in contact with the inner surface of the member, A, and thus becoming marred or removed. When it is desired to present a new column of figures which can be examined through the slot, 2, the o erator will take the member, A, in one han and insert the other hand in the member, B, and by turning the member, B, a new column will be brought into view, and by moving the slide, 4, any number of figures can be re sented for adding. By this method di erent columns of figures can be presented and added by moving the slide vertically upon the member, A.
It is evident that more or less slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth, but:
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An educational appliance comprising an inner and outer member, the outer member having an opening through one end thereof, a shank on the inner member passing through the opening in the outer memher for connecting the inner member there to, whereby the inner member is capable of being rotated within the outer member, said inner member having columns of characters thereon, said outer member having an opening therein for exposing the characters on the inner member, and a slide for varying the amount of exposure of the column on the inner member through the opening in the outer member.
2. An educational appliance comprising inner and outer members having closed upper ends and open lower ends, the outer member having an opening therethrough, a shank on the inner member adapted to pass through the opening in the outer member for connecting the members together whereby the inner member is capable of rotation within the outer member, said inner member having columns of characters thereon, said outer member having a slot therein through which the characters are exposed, and a slide on the outer member for varying the amount of exposure of the column of charalcters on the inner member through the s 0t.
3. An educational device comprising inner and outer members having one end open, supporting the inner member Within the the inner member provided With columns of outer member. 10 1 characters thereon, the outer member having In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, a slot therein through Which the characters in the presence of two Witnesses.
are exposed, a slide on the outer member for I JOHN G. WARFIELD. Varying the amount of exposure of the co1- \Vitnesses:
umn of characters on the inner member WV. M. HOLBROQK,
through the slot, and means for rotatably J. B. HILMER.
