Be it vknown that I, EDGAR L. KoiLr., a citizen, of the United States, residing at Staunton, in the county of Clayand State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Drafting Square, of which the following is a specification.
invention relates particularly adapted to angular cuts,` such las stair cases, or the like. i H
`An important object of my invention is to provide a square so constructed that one u setting-,will serve to make numerous cuts of the sameangle i Af further object `of the invention isl to provide a square of the above mentioned character, which will make cuts to any angle of degree necessary.
`A furthery object of the invention is to providea square of the above mentioned character which can be adjusted toumake cutsto the required rise per foot.` i
Other objects and advantages ofthe invcntion will be a parent during the, course to squares, land is be used in making required on rafters,
ofl the following n escription.
In the accompanying drawing formin a part of this specification and in which like numerals `are e sameembodying my invention. n
igure 2 is a plan view of same.` Figure 3 is a detail view of the cross- 35 arm. i
Figure 4 is a squarel A n n j In the drawing, wherein for the purpose i of illustration is shown a preferred embodi` partial detail view of the nates i a` square, `preferabl comprising a` blade 2 and7 a tongue 3. `The blade 2 is divided into any' desired graduations as indicated at 4, while the tongue is `ment `of `my invention, the numeral 1 desigformed of steel,
i 14? "likewisedivided into graduations as indi` cated ati5. j
Connected toqthesquare by means of a rivet 6,. or the like, is a cross-arm 7, the ends of which are provided with extension edge of the crossarm 7 is provided with graduations 9 which coact with the graduations 4 and 5 on the blade 2 and .tongue 3 respectively of the square 1. Thelower edge of the cross-arm 7 is proprovided with an opening 14, which same, and that various changes in the shape,

edge of which is divided into degrees as indicated at l1. The square l and the cross-` armg 7 ai'e provided respectively with the openings l2 and 13, for the purpose ofallowing the rivet 6 to pass i through and join same. The semi-circular extension 10 is ermits a thumb screw l5 to pass through sme. The square 1 is provided with a semi-circular opening 16 through which the thumb screw 15 passes, and allows movement of the square 1 to the limits of the opening 16.
In the use of the device, the cross-arm 7 is placedalong the edge `of the member u on which work is to be performed, and hel [in position by means of the lugs 8. The square is then placed at the required angle and they thumb screw tightened after which any number of boards or the like may be marked. 75
It is to be understood that theform of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the size, and arrangement of parts may be resortedto without departing `from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of thesubjoined claims. Y
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A device of the character described,
arm provided with an the center thereof, and graduations in the angular measure on theedge ofthe arcuate extension, a cross arm provided with graduations le element comprising a square provided with graduations consistinvi of units of length formed on the lower edges of the said square, a ,pluf rality of lugs formed on the side of the cross arm, means for pivotally connecting the cross armand square andmeans for rigidly securing the square to the` cross arm.
2.A` device of the character described comprising a cross arm provided with graduations on the upper edge thereof, `an arcuate extension formed in the centerof the cross armbearing marksconsisting of units of angular measure on the edge thereof, ex tension lugs formed on the extremities of the cross arm on the faces opposite the markings, an adjustable square comprising a blade and a tongue provided with graduations on the lower edge adapted to oo-act with the l10` arcuate extension in gradu-tions formed on the cross bar, a pivot In testimony whereof, I have affixed my pin pvot-ally connecting the cross arm and signature in the presence of two witnesses. square, an arcuate opening formed in thev lower portion of the square adapted to re- 'EDGAR L. KOILE.
6 ceive a thumb screw secured to the cross arm Witnesses:
for the purpose of locking the square with IDA A. FERRELL, the cross arm. l l FERN L. B12-vrs.
