BUTTON-FASTENER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led .Tanuary 23, 1909.
Serial No. 473,868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN Gr. C. HRN- ING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Button-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to button fasteners, such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 687,028, granted to me November 19, 1901.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved button fastener, for conveniently and quickly fastening a button in place on a garment by the use of a pin engaging and holding the button and adapted t0 be passed through the cloth of the garment, the pin engaging a retaining device on the back of the garment and pref erably formed of a plate having a head and neck for engagement by the U-shaped end of the pin to fasten the pin and plate together.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pin; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the retaining device; Fig. 3 1s a cross section of the pin engaging an apertured button and passed through the cloth of the garment; Fig. 4 is a cross section of the improvement as applied, to hold an apertured button in place on the cloth of a garment, the section being on the line 4 4 of Fig. 5; Fig. 5 is a sectional front view of the improvement on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a rear face view of the improvement as applied.
The button fastener consists of a pin A and a retaining device B, of which the pin A is made of spring wire, bent into a U- shaped end A, from which extend integrally and approximately at right angles parallel Shanks A2. The shanks A2 and the side members of the end A are adapted to be passed through the holes in the button C, and the said shanks A2 and the rear portions of the side members of the end A are adapted to pass through the cloth D of the garment on which the button C is to be fastened by the button fastener, as indicated in Figs. 3, 4 and 6.
The retaining device B is in the form of a doubled-up plate, having the front plate member B and the rear plate member B2, the front plate member B being provided at its top with a head B3 and a neck B4, adapted to be engaged by the side members of the end A of the pin A, so as to hold the retaining device B in position on the pin A. The shanks A2 of the pin A are adapted to pass between the members B and B2 of the doubled up plate, so as to hold the said Shanks in place and to conceal the same. The members Bl and B2 are sufliciently spaced apart to accommodate the Shanks A2, and in order to hold the usaid members spaced apart a desired distance, the sides of the rear member B2 are provided with inwardly-extending flanges B5 abutting against the front member B, as plainly indicated in Figs. 2, 4 and 6.
In using the device, the button C is engaged with the end A of the pin A, as previously explained, and then the pin is passed through the cloth D of the garment and the fastener B is pushed up in position, so that the shanks A2 pass into the spiace between the front and rear members B and B2, and the head B3 nally engages the side members of the end A of the pin A and temporarily springs the same apart, to allow the head B3 to pass up past the side members of the end A, and then when the neck BA1 is opposite the side members of the end A, then the side members by their own resiliency spring back into position and in firm contact with the neck B4, to securely hold the retaining device B in position on the pin A, as indicated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6.
The butt-on fastener shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufactured, and conveniently engaged with the button and the cloth, to securely hold the button in position on the garment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A button fastener, comprising a pin having a U-shaped end adapted for engagement with a button, and shanks extending integrally and at an angle from the said end, and a retaining plate having a head and neck adapted to be passed between the members of the U-shaped end of thel pin and engaged thereby.
2. A button fastener, comprising a pin having a U-shaped end adapted for engagement with a button and Shanks extending Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
integrally and at an angle :from the said end, and a retaining device for the said pin in the form of a doubled-up plate, one of the plate members having a head and neck to be passed between the members of the pin and engaged thereby and the members of the plate being spaced apart t0 receive and conceal the said pin shanks between them.
3. A button fastener, comprising a pin having a U-shaped Vend adapted for engagement with a button and shanks extending integrally and at an angle from the said end, and a retaining device for the said pin in the form of a doubled-up plate, one of the plate members having a head and neck to be passed between the members of the pin and engaged thereby and the members of the plate being spaced apart to receive and Iconceal the said pin Shanks between them,
name to thisspecificat-ion in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. Y
