BAG-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 26, 1910.
Application filed August 26, 1909. Serial No. 514,714.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-Iowano D. EARL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dec, .in the county of Cimarron and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Bag l astener and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will onable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to bag fasteners, and has for its object to provide an improved device of this character adapted to be used particularly on paper bags such as are used in rocery stores.
no of the objects of the invention is to provide a bag of this character having a fastener embedded therein provided with means for securing both ends of a cord by which the bag is securely fastened.
lVith these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bag, showing the fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side View of a bag partly in section having my fastener applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the fastener, shown detached from the bag. Fig. 4; is a side view of the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the cord applied to the fastener.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates an ordinary paper bag provided with the usual month end 2. Surrounding a portion of this bag is a strip 3 which is preferably of cloth or any other suitable material and is secured to the bag 1 by any suitable adhesive material. Between the strip 3 and the bag is mounted the clamp 4 and the loo 5 of said clamp protrudes through a slit 6 ormcd in said strip. The upper end of the clamp 4 is provided with a loop 7 which is approximately rectangular in plan view and is designed to prevent the lug 5 from rocking or turning.
The lower end of the clamp is provided with a looped portion 8 with which one end of a cord 9 is connected. The cord 9 is also inserted a part of the way, between the strip 3 and the bag 1. The cord 9 after passing beyond the strip 3 is wound around the resilient lug 5 which is provided with clamping loops 10 which secures the free end of the cord 01' cable against displacement after it has passed across the mouth of the bag 1, thus insuring the safe keeping of the con tents of said bag. 1
The resiliency of the upper portion of the lug 5 causes the loops 10 to press outwardly thus exerting a pressure on the wound portion of the cord or cable which surrounds said lug.
The lower end of the clamp member is also provided with a spur 11 which cooperates with the loop 7 in preventing the lug 5 from turning.
lVhat is claimed is:--
In combination with a bag having a flexible strip secured thereto, a holding member secured on the bag with av portion thereon confined against the bag by the flexible strip and a. portion thereof projecting outwardly through a slot in the flexible strip, the portion confined between the bag and the flexible strip comprising oppositely extending looped portions adapted to prevent the holding member from turning on the bag, the portion projecting outwardly of the bag comprising a closed loop, and a cord or tying member secured to one end of the confined portion 8, adapted to be wrapped around the bag and secured by its other end to the portion of the member projecting outwardly of the bag.
