Description

J; H. PILKINGTON.
PEN AND PENCIL CLIP.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 1, 1909.
Patented. Apr. 19, 1910.
('1? tonuu JOSEPH Hr PILKINGTON, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
PEN Ann PENCIL CLIP.
T 0 all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. PILKING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaterbury, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut,-have invented an Improve ment in Pen and Pencil Clips, of which the following is a specification.
, This invention relates to attachments to pencils or pens such as fountain pens or similar devices to enable them to be secured to the cloth at the'edge of a pocket so as to be prevented from slipping out of the pocket if the person carrying the same stoops over.
Such devices are quite well known and the utility thereof need not be specifically emphasized. a
The object of this invention is to provide a clip attachment of the character mentioned which. shall be simple and durable, of low cost and having a reliably smooth solid ballhead which will grasp the fabric between it and the side of the pen or pencil to which the attachment is applied.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
Of the accompanying drawings :Figures 1 and 2 are elevations from two diii'erent points of View, of a common form of fountain pen having my attachment applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a. perspective view of the attachment. froni which the attachment is made but with the tip of the shank partly formed for insertion in the ball-head. Figs. 5 and 6 are sectional views of fm'ms of the ball-head as formed ready to be driven on the tip of the shank shown in. Fig. '1. Fig. 7 is a sectional View on line 7-7, Fig. 4.
Similar reference characters indicate the same or similar parts in all of the views.
A fountain pen is indicated at A, but it is to be understood thatthis is shown merely for nnposes of illustration and not of limitation since the attachment presently de scribed is equally applicable to a pencil or an ordinary pen, or similar device.
The attachment comprises a band or ring portion 10 and a shank-portion 11' integral with the band portion the whole being formed of a piece of suitable resilient metal, preferably sheet metal, such as spring brass. The band portion is preferably formed with Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 1, 1909.
Fig. 4: is a view'of the shank Patented Apr. 19,1910. Serial No. 487,276.
struck up ribs to strengthen thesa ne and may be ornamented in any-suitable way by etching or otherwise.
The shank 11 projects from one edge of the band or ring portion and is preferably curved outward slightly as indicated at 12 in Fig. 2 so thatthe shank will stand slightly away from the side of the article to which the attachment is applied, as shown in Fig. 8. The band portion, when the article is in completedform, is ring-shaped but having an opening'so that it will constitute a. spring ring or band adapted to frictionally grasp the article to whicli'the attachment or clip is applied.
As stated the band portion and shank portion are formed integrally of a piece of sheet metal. Therefore the whole can be economically produced by a stamping operation which may at the same time form the strengthening ribs of the band portion. The structure is such that there is no possibility of the shank portion becomingseparated from the band portion, and the amount of resilience of the shank portion may depend either upon the thickness of the metal or the width of theshank.
The tip of the shank llis formed with lateral ears which are bent around as indicated at 13 Fig. t so that the extreme tip will be nearly circular in cross section, the ears v13 being however preferably slightlyseparate from each other so that they will have some resilience. Below the ears 13 the shank preferably pointed as shown at 14 in Fig. 4.
The ball-head 15. is of solid metal and is formed with a drilled hole 16 into which the tip of the shank 11 may be driven after which the slides of the hole 16 in the ball may be closed inward by any suitable pressure or blow so that the ball-head will be immovably attached to the tip of the shank 11 without requiring any soldering or equivalent operation. I
. The ball 15 completely incloses the ears 13 of the shank tip so that there can be no rough portions of the device which might tear or mar the fabric on the outer surface ofv the garment containing the pocket in which the pen or pencil is being carried.
It will be understood of course. that the ball-head l5 presses on the outer side of the fabric while the pen or pencil isinside of the pocket, the, edge of the fabric being passed up between the shank 11 and the side ,i ears, said earsbeing bent to form an ap- 15 of the pen or pencil to which the ring porproximate circle, and a solid head provided tion 10 is attached. with a recess to receivesaid ears, said recess Having now described my invention what having a tapered portion, said stem being I claim is: provided with a pointed end adapted to be 1. An improvement in pen and pencil wedged into the tapered portion of said re- 20 clips comprising a fiat stem having one excess. treinity provided with lateral ears bent to In testimony whereof I afiix my signature form an approximate circle; and a solid head in'presence of two witnesses.
provided with a recess to receive said ears s p 1 T the outer edge of said recess being closed JOSEPH PILKINGTOIN' over the tops of said shoulders. Witnesses:
2. An improvement in pen and pencil GAsIMm H. BRoNsoN,
clips comprising a flat stem having lateral ALICE M. CARY.
