To'all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN H. HAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and btate of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Devices for Securing Fountain-Pens, &c., to Garments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved pen holder or device for securing a fountain pen or similar article'in position in a pocket and preventing the article from being displaced therein or therefrom accidentally or otherwise.

In carrying out my present invention, I

preferably em loy a spring band adapted tofit over and side upon and to frictionally engage the surface of the pen, pencil, or similar article, a socket member and a stud member, one of the said members being adapted to be secured to the cloth of a garment adjacent to a pocket therein and the other member to be connected with the said spring band so that the, said members may engage one another to secure the pen or pencil in position in the pocket.

In the drawing, F igure 1 is an elevation of the spring band forming part of my present invention, showing the'samc as applied to the cap of a fountain pen, a portion of which latter is shown in section. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the part shown in Fig. 1 and taken at ri ht angles thereto. Fig. 3 is an elevation o the stud member forming part of my invention. Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section illustrating the parts in their engaged relationship and Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation showing the fountain pen' as held in position within a pocket.

Referring to the drawing, 10 indicates the cap or removable end of a fountain pen and 1.1. represents a spring band clamp member which is preferably split and shown at 12 and, is adapted to fit over, slide upon and frictionally engage the surface of the pen cap 10.

In order to eti'ect a saving of material and increase its resiliency, the spring band 1.1 may be provided with suitably shaped openings 13. Opposite the division point 12 of the spring band the socket 14 is employed. and as will be apparent, this socket may be stamped up integrally with the spring band 11 or may be made separately and connected thereto .in any desired manner. The socket member is secured to the spring band as it projects less than the stud and is not so much in the way in the use of the pen or pencil. 1

The stud member forming part of my present invention is preferably of usual construction consisting of a series of radially disposed cupped upspring arms 17 secured at their free ends by an overturned flange 16. Said flange forms part of a disk having an interiorly threaded socket center 15. I provide a thumb -screw comprising a threaded stem 18 and knurled disk head 19. The stud member is better adapted to be secured to the cloth of the garment as it is readily provided with the socket center for the stem 18.

By reference to Fig. 5, 20 indicates the cloth of a garment forming the pocket therein, which 1s provided with a suitable lining 21, and 22 designates the cloth of the garment itself which is provided with a suitable lining 23. Now as will be a parent the screw-threaded shank 18 of the t umb-screw may be passed through the cloth 22 and lining 23 in any suitable position and the spring snap stud member secured in position thereon, and that when the stud member is so fixed, the pen having the spring band and the socket member thereon, may be inserted in the pocket and .be readily adjusted to such a position thatthe stud member may be caused to enter the socket member to secure the pen in position within the pocket. I nrthermore it will be noticed that the spring band and stud member may be ad justed to any position 'on an article with which the same may be used and hence the device comprising my present invention'is equally applicable for use upon pencils and similar articles as upon fountain pens.

I claim as my invention:

1. A. device for securing a fountain pen, pencil. etc. to a garment, comprising a spring clamp to fricti'onhlly embrace the stem of the pen or pencil and a socket mem ber secured to the said spring clamp, a stud member, and. means connecting therewith and adapted to engage the cloth of a garment, whereby, when the socket and stud members are in engagement the pen or pencil is held securely.
