Description
J. N. CLOUSE.
FASTENER FOR BARREL HEADS.
APPLICATION FILED SEPTS, 190a.
Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
W/T/VESSES:
JOSEPH N. CLOUSE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNGR TO THE PATENT HEADING COMPANY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
FASTENER FOR BARREL-HEADS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH N. CLoUsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Barrel-Heads; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fasteners for barrel heads such as are designed to be used for packing pork in to cure it, also pickles, and sauerkraut. And the obj ect of my invention is to do away with the labor and expense of heading up and unheading the barrels every time that the packer is desirous of examining the contents of the barrels, and besides it is almost impossible to get the barrels tight again after they are once used and opened in that way, by taking off some of the hoops; and again, the saving of the barrels is certainly a great object. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a face View of the head complete, with the removable head portion locked into the outer rim. Fig. 2 is a vertical center cut section of the head complete taken on the line znm Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a face view of the removable part of the head taken out separate showing the bolts drawn from the outer rim. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail group of perspective views of the several parts forming the central movement of the device. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail perspective view of one of the arms or bolts. I11 all of which views like letters and figures refer to like parts throughout.
Referring to the drawings, I will describe the various parts of my invention and their working relation to each other.
In the drawings A. is the outer ring of wood which is the portion of the head that is hooped up solid into the barrel. B. is the central wooden portion of the head and it is the removable portion of the head. To this outer wood ring portion A. is secured a ring of metal C, which may be in one piece or in segments. This metal rim G. is pro- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 8, 1908.
Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
Serial No. 451,983.
vided with four or more loops 0 under which the ends ofthe arms or bolts catch to bolt the head in. To this central wooden portion B. a projecting ring of metal I). is screwed; this ring may be solid or in segments. It
is also provided with four or more loops al which register radially with the loops on the outer metal ring. This metal ring I). is provided on its under side with a recess or projection in which is held a packing ring of cork E. which laps over onto the wood of the outer rim A. and forms an air-tight joint when the bolts are forced out into the loops on the outer rim A.
In the center of the removable head portion B. a base plate G. is let in and screwed fast to the wood, and a central bolt F. standing up in its center passes through the other central parts as follows. This base plate G. is provided with a track g cut out of its flange into which the stop pin 7L5 works as the pivot plate H. turns. This pivot plate H. is provided with four projecting pivots, 71 /L2, [L 72, on which the ends of the arms I. are pivoted; these arms and pivot-s may be four or more, as desired. When the arms I. are placed in position on the pivots, the fol low plate J. with its series of holes, 7' j j*, j, receives the ends of the pivot pins 71/ etc, and forms a support for the ends of the pivots on the top side of the arms. This follow plate J. is provided with a square projection j for a wrench, by means of which the plates H. and J. may be turned and the bolts or arms I. forced outward from the center and into the outer rim. A nut on the bolt F. holds the combination together and also holds the arms at any extension that is put on them by use of the large wrench holding the head in firmly and making an air-tight oint all around on the cork packing ring E. It takes but a turn of the nut f to clamp up the whole central combination of parts and hold any expansion given to the arms by the force of the large wrench. The end of the bolt F. is provided with cross kerfs dividing it into four parts, and the nut f is provided with four holes drilled through to the thread so that when the nut f is screwed down solid it may be stopped at a point where the holes in the nut register with one of the kerfs in the bolt and a seal wire K. may be inserted to prevent the contents of the barrel from being tampered with.
Having described the various parts of my invention and their working relation to each other, the manner of operating the device is already plainly shown thereby.
I am aware that there are removable churn heads, man-hole covers and removable heads for barrels. I therefore do not desire to cover all removable barrel heads, but
What I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A fastener for barrel heads comprising, in combination, an outer ring having locking loops formed thereon, a head having a ring adapted to fit within said outer ring and having loops adapted to register with said loops on said outer ring, a base plate secured centrally of said head and having a central pivot post, a revoluble member mounted on said base-plate, said revoluble member comprising a pivot plate having a central boss fitted over said pivot-post, and having a plurality of upstanding lugs, an upper plate adapted to fit over said pivot plate and secured to revolve therewith, arms pivoted on said lugs and projecting through said loops on said inner ring, and means for revolving said revoluble member for project-- ing said arms into engagement with said loops on said outer ring.
2. A fastener for barrel heads comprising in combination, an outer ring having locking loops formed thereon, a head having a ring adapted. to fit within said outer ring having loops adapted to register with said loops on said outer ring, a revoluble member pivoted centrally of said head, said revoluble member comprising a pivot plate having a plurality of Lip-standing lugs,an upper plate adapted to fit over said pivot plate and having apertures to receive said upstanding lugs, arms pivoted on said lugs, and projecting through said loops on said inner ring and means for revolving said revoluble member for projecting said arms through said loops on said inner ring and into engagement with said loops on said outer rin In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
