To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUST H. F. SoHLmoKnR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vinita, in the county of Craig and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and Improved Sounding Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a new and improved sounding toy adapted to produce snapping sounds of various tones and qualities.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple and compact device, which may be cheaply manufactured, and which is adapted to produce sounds of various pitches by varying the manner of manipulating the same.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the manner of manipulating the device; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, taken from the oppositev side; Fig. 3 is an enlarged bottom view of the device; and Fig. 4 is a cross section through the center of the device.

Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the device, 1 indicates a top, which is preferably formed of sheet metal and consists in a convex member 2, which is preferably made of springy material and is adapted to be snapped in and out, and a flange 3, which is preferably circular in form, extending from the convex member 2.

(lo-acting with the flange 3 of the top 1, there is provided a flange 4, which is also preferably circular in shape, and which is integral with and extended from a bottom 5 having a central perforation 6 therein. The top and bottom are adapted to co-act to form an inclosed box, acting as a sounding box, the top of which may be snapped in and will automatically spring out by reason of the tension of the material, thereby producing a vibration of the same, which causes a snapping noise. The tone or pitch of this noise may be varied by placing the index finger more or less over the opening Specification of Letters Patent.

which is indicated at 6, so that when the finger is entirely over the opening, the noise will be subdued and mild, and the intensity of the noise may be increased by gradually moving the finger, until it reaches its highest pitch when the finger is entirely re moved from the front of the opening.

By this simple device, various noises may be imitated; for example, the various paces of a horse may be imitated by varying the number of vibrations in a given space of time, and also by varying the intensity of the vibrations by closing more or less the opening 6 in the bottom 5.

Various other noises may be imitated, such as the croaking of a frog, the snap of a drum, or the click of a telegraph sounder. lVhile the perforation 6 in the bottom 5 serves the purpose of varying the tone which the instrument may produce, it also serves, together with the sounding box formed by the top and bottom members, to force the springy member 2 outward in case it has been forced inwardly too far, by placing the mouth at the opening and blowing into the box. The fact that the top and bottom are separable, enables the operator to take them apart and vary the convexity of the portion 2 by pressing from the inside of the top.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a top having a springy convex portion integral therewith, of abottom connected to said top, having a soundcontrolling perforation therein.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a box, of means for producing a snapping noise, said box having a sound-controlling opening therein whereby said noise may be varied.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a cylindrical box, of means for producing a snapping noise, said box having a sound-controlling opening therein whereby said noise may be varied.
