A.A.PREEMAN.
WHISTLING AND MUSICAL BATTLE.
Patented Feb. 4, 1896.
WKW.
UNITED STATES PATENT CEEicE.
ALBERT A. FREEMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE SPECIALTY NOVELTY COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WHISTLING AND MUSICAL RATTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,958, dated February 4, 1896.
Application filed November 13, 1895. Serial No. 568,935. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVhistling and Musical Rattles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to that class of toys known as whistling and musical rattles, and in such connection it relates particularly to the construction and arrangement of such a toy.
The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple, durable and amusing toy combining the functions of a Whistle and rattle and a musical reed instrument; second, to provide a rattle having a case each end of which is closed by a disk whistle and a rattle-tube movable in the case between the whistles when the toy is agitated, the ends of said rattle-tube being normally open and having a reed-disk therein and normally closing the same, the movement 'of said reed-tube giving forth a rattling noise and musical tones and expelling air through the whistles in the respective ends of the case to give forth a whistling noise, and, third, to provide a rattle having a case in which each end is closed by a disk whistle, a fixed reed-disk located in said case adjacent to one end of the same, and a traveler-rattle mounted in said case and provided with one or more reeds for producing musical tones in conjunction with the whistling and rattling sounds or noises produced by the manipulation of the toy.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a whistling and musical rattle con structed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scbpe of my invent-ion will be more fully understood from the following description ,taken in connection with the accompanying draw-' ings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure l is a View, partly in side elevation and partly in section, of a toy, showing the fixed disk reed, the movable rattle and reed tube, and the whistles at the respective ends of the case of the toy; and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 00 as of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a case, preferably in the form of a cylindrical tube, and A is the handle or support therefor. The respective ends B of the case A are closed by a whistle B, which consists of two convex disks united together at their periphery and having a central opening B Within the case A and movable therein is an open-ended rattle-tube '0, provided therein with a disk or diaphragm D, having one or more reeds cl. This inner tube C is of the same contour as the case A, and its periphery is slightly smaller than the inner surface of the case A. I
The whistles B at the respective ends of the case A may be secured by means of solder or in any preferred manner, and if desired an auxiliary disk or diaphragm E, provided with one or more reeds 6, may be secured in the case A between an end of the tube C and a whistle B, as illustrated in Fig. 1, for increasing the quantity of musical tones or sounds derived from the toy by manipulation thereof. Vhen the case A is shaken or agitated by swinging the handle A, the air in the case on either side of the disk D in the rattle-tube C is expelled through the central perforations of one or the other of the whistles B and through the reeds d and 6. There is thus produced at either end of the case a whistling noise as well as musical tones or sounds, and at the same time by the movement of the rattle-tube C in the case A rattling noise will be produced.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new,
and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A combined whistling and musical rattle, comprising a case having a whistle at each end thereof, an open-ended tube adapted to traverse said case and provided with a disk having one or more reeds, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A whistling and musical rattle, comprising a case having a whistle secured at each end thereof, an open-ended tube of slightly smaller diameter than that of said case and adapted to traverse the same, a disk provided my signature in the presence of two subscribwith one or more reeds, a disk provided with ing witnesses.
reeds secured within said case between one n 1 end of said tube and a whistle of said ease, ALBERI FREEMAN 5 substantially as and for the purposes de- Vitnesses:
scribed. THOMAS M. SMITH,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set RICHARD C. MAXWELL.
