WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 4, 1910.
App1ication led April 6, 1909. Serial No. 488,273.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (l1-[ARLES H. Harmony, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garrettsville, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to washing machines, and my object is to provide a novel and highly etlieient washer especially adapted for family use, but which may be elnployed for general laundry purposes.
In the accompanying d "awings, which illustrate my invention and form a part of this speciiication, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine, centrally broken away to show the interior thereof. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view taken therethrough, and, F ig. 3 is a plan view of the inner face of the clamping plate to be hereinafter described.
In the embodiment of my invention, as shown, I provide a cylindrical receptacle 1, having upon its base a plurality of upstanding brackets 15, supporting a sub-base 14, provided with a plurality of apertures 17. The receptacle 1, has also a top plate 2, provided with a central opening through which the vertical pipe 7, extends downwardly to a point substantially centrally of said receptacle, and is secured at its lower extremity to a face plate 9.
A clamping plate is secured in face to face engagement with face plate 9, by fastening means extending` through openings 18, in the former and engaging with the latter. As shown in Fig. 3, the clamping plate 10,
of radial slots 12a and 13, around its central opening' 16, communicating with the bore of the vertical pipe 7. Radial slots 12a and 13u receive the extremities of the outstanding U-shaped rods 12 and 13, the former of which extends diametrically at right angles to the latter, and are bent downwardly and angular-ly to points slightly above the sub-base 14.
The vertical pipe 7, as shown, is provided with a series of perforations S, above the face plate 9, and is connected at its upper outer end, by means of a T-coupling 3, to pipes 4, and 5, extending horizontally, and in diametrically opposite directions therefrom, said pipe 4 being relatively short and communicating` with the bore of pipe 7, to permit of the exhaust of superfluous steam from the receptacle l, while pipe 5 extends to the edge of the receptacle, and is provided with an upstanding handle whereby the vertical pipe 7 and rods 12 and 13, may be rotated within the receptacle 1.
The operation is as follows, water being introduced into the receptacle l, to aheight above the face plate 9, and the clothes placed within the water and resting upon the subbase 14, being thus prevented from actual contact with the heated receptacle base, which, it is understood, is placed over a suitable flame or fire. The initially heated water below sub-base 14:, rises through the apertures thereof, and, together with the heated water rising through the lower end of pipe 7, and falling out through its apertures 8, causes a steady circulation of water through the clothes, which greatly assists in cleansing the same. At the lame time the pipe 7, is being rotated, by pipe 5 and its handle, and the clothes are being stirred around by the rods or stirril'lg arms 12 and 13. The superfluous steam, before stated, esca )es through pipes 7 and 4l.
I' aving thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. In a washing machine, the combination of a receptacle, a closure therefor having a central opening, a pipe depending through said opening and provided with a series of apertures therein, stirring arms carried by the lower end of said pipe, and pipes connected to the upper, outer end of said depending pipe, one of said last named pipes having a handle, and the other of said pipes communicatin' with said depending pipe to convey supertliious steam from said receptacle.
2. In a washing machine, the combination of a receptacle, a closure therefor having a central opening, a rotatable member depending through said opening having a plate secured upon its lower extremity, a clamping plate opposing, and secured to, said first named plate, and a plurality of radially outstanding stirring rods having their inner ends secured between said plates, alternate ones of said rods extending horizontally in a plane with said plates, and alternate ones thereof being bent angularly and downwardly.
3. In a washing machine, the combination of a receptacle, having a plurality of upstanding brackets upon its base, a plate disposed upon said brackets, forming a sub-base and provided with a plurality of apertures, a closure for said receptacle having a central opening', a tubular rotatable member depending through said opening and provided with a plurality of apertures therein, stirring arms carried by the inner end of said member, and pipes connected to the outer end of said member, one 01"' said pipes having a handle, and the other of said pipes communicating with said member to convey su pertluous steam from said receptacle.
Il. In a washing machine, the combination of a receptacle having a plurality of upstanding brackets upon its base, a plate disposed upon said brackets, forming a subbase and provided with a plurality o apertures, a closure for said receptacle having a central opening, a tubular rotatable member depending through said opening and proe vided with a plurality ot apertures, a handle carried by the outer' end of said member, a face plate secured upon the inner end oi said member, a clamping plate opposing, and secured to, said lirst named plate, and a plurality of radially outstanding stirring rods having their inner ends secured between said plates, certain of said rods being bent angularly and downwardly.
5. In a washing machine, the combination of a receptacle vhaving a plurality of upstaiiding brackets upon its base, a plate disposed upon said brackets, frming a subbase and provided with a plurality of apertures, a closure for said receptacle having a central opening, a tubular rotatable member depending through said opening and provided with a plurality of apertures, pipes connected to the upper outer end of said depending tubular member, one of said pipes having a handle, and the other of said pipes communicating with said depending pipe toconvey superfluous steam romsaid receptacle, a face plate secured upon the inner end of said member, a clamping plate opposing, and secured to, said first named plate, and a plurality of radially outstanding stirring rods having their inner ends secured between said plates, certain of said rods beH ing bent angularly and downwardly.
in testimony whereof l aHiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
