To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAFAYETTE HERRITT, citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Run, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tack Hammers and Pullers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to the class of wood working tools but more particularly to a hammer and my invention has for its object to provide an implement of this class which is so constructed and arranged that it can be employed as an ordinary hammer and which can be quickly converted into a tack or nail puller.

With this object in view my invention consists in the novel construction of the handles of the hammer and in the novel construction of the hammer head; and my invention also consists in the combination of thehammer head and the handle as will be first fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective'view of the hammer constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the implement converted into a tack or nail puller.

Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which;

1 indicates the implement which comprises the handle 2 and hammer head 3. The said hammer head is of the usual form and provided with a claw 4 as is usually found in hammers of the ordinary type. The handle 2 is as shown in Fig. 1 bifurcated at 5 providing two extensions 6 and 7, said extensions 6 and 7 straddlinggthe hammer head 3 gles to to which hammer head the extensions are pivoted at 8.

Referring now to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the hammer head 3 is provided with a lug or projection 9 substantially at right angles to the hammer head, while a slidable sleeve 10 is employed on the handle 2, said sleevelO being arranged to slide over the extensions 6 and 7 on the handle.

Having thus fully described the several parts of my invention its operation is as follows: In order to'employ the implement as a hammer, as shown in Fig. 1, the slidable sleeve 10 is passed along the extensions 6 and 7 until it engages the lug or extension 9 on the hammer head. When the slidable sleeve is in this position the hammer head is effectually held siibstantially at right anthe handle which is the usual position. The lug or projection 9 being encompassed by the slidable sleeve 10 the hammer head is effectually maintained in proper operative position. When it is desired to employ the implement as a tack or nail puller, as shown in Fig. 2, the slidable sleeve 10 is passed down the extensions 6 and 7 and beyond the same, and the hammer head is turned on the pivot 8 until the hammer head lies between the extensions 6 and 7 hen in this position the slidable sleeve 10 is passed up the extensions 6 and 7 and over the end of the hammer head into position shown in Fig. 2 encompassing the end of the hammer head and ellectually maintaining the same between the extensions 6 and 7 This position of the hammer head throws the claw 4 into position shown in Fig. 2 which to ether with the handle 2 practically provi es a claw bar as clearly shown in the drawing providing a simple and durable tack or nail puller.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
