Be it known that-we, 'lHnoDoRn BAILEY, of the county of Fairfax, and State of Virginia, and HOWARD H. YOUNG, of Washington city, District of Columbia,

.haveI invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manner of Attaching Straps to Buckles, Snap- Hooks, Rings, Svc.; and we hereby declare the following to be afull and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a snap-hook with our improved dovetail recess and strap attached thereto, and

Figure 2, a central section ofiig. l.

Figure 3 is a perspective View ot' a buckle, illustrating the manner of attaching a strap thereto,` and Figure 4, a longitudinal central section of g. 3.

Figure 5,illustrates the manner of taperingoii` one end of the strap, and of folding the end oyer to form the wedge to ll up the dovetail recess in' the hook, buckle, or ling.

Figure 6 illustrates the manner of attachinga strap to a ring.

Figure 7 shows a buckle, partially in section, to show the lugs on the sides ofthe dovetail recess, toprevent the strap playing back against the end of the tongue, or becoming' detached, and

The nature ofour invention consists in providing the lower end of buckles, snap-hooks, &o., with a devetail recess, to receive the end of a strap after it has been slightly tapered off and folded over to form a wedge; and also in providing the upper face of the buckle-frame with a transverse slot, so-shaped above the dovetail recess as to' form a guard for the end of the strap, through which the -tongue of the buckle passes; and further, in so shaping the rear end of the tongue that the projection thereon `shall extend below the line of the centre of the wedge-shaped end of thev strap within the recess, when said tongue is folded down against the front end of the frame, or connected with another' strap. y

, We provide-an ordinary snap-hook, with a dovetail recess, and by having the rear end of the spring curved upward, the strap, to which the hook is attached, is prevented from working out, and yet maybe 'detached by pushing'the strap back with the fingers, as shown in figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. v

We make our buckle-frame either' with the tongue Working on an axis, extending across the frame, and casting on the inner sides of the recess two lugs, al a, to prevent the strap A working back, as shown in iig. 7, or the tongue to have its axis on the upper face of the plate B, (see figs. 3, 4, and 8,) in which case the tongue will have a projection, b, to prevent the backward play of the strapyand by folding the tongue in the *position shown by dotted lines, tig. 4, the strap may be moved backward, vand thus det-ached, and

lwhen the tongue is through the strap C, and pressure applied to said strap, the projection b is kept in position below and in front of the larger or wedge-shaped end of the strapA.

To connect a strap, all that is required is to first taper one end of said strap, as shown in iig. 5, and by passing the tapered end through the dovetal slot and folding it over, as sh'own in figs. 5 apdS, or under, as illustrated in iig. 4, and drawing it within the dovetail recess, a secure attachment of tlfe strap' to the buckle, snap-hook, or ring, is obtained, without the use of sewing, riveting, or of using such devices as tend to perforate, cut, or otherwise weaken the strap.

Our improvements are applicable to the rings used on skates, bridles, or halters, and to all forms of buckles,. or snap-hooks, and we contemplate, as a Afeature of our invention, having the dovetail recess or socket'D tapering on all its sides, when desirable, as illustrated in figs. G and 7 of the drawings.

The crossbar E, forming the guard for end of strap C, may either be cast, raised above the face of the recess-plate B, as seen in iigs. 3 and 4,' or on the same plane, or nearly so, as shown in figs. 7 and 8.

Having thus fully described our invention,

. What we' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
