Description
A. B.I]V1LCOX ,l OF LOWELL, -ll/[ASSA(JH USF/FFS.
Letters Patent. Nol-93,655, dated August 10, 1869.
'IMPRovEMsNT ntV SUSPENDERS.
The Schedule refer-led to in these Letters Patentl and making of the saine.
To all whnm tina-y concern 'Be it k'ncwnthat- I, A. B. W1`LCox,of Lowell, in'
the county of Middlesex, vand in the Stateic .Massa-l chusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and do hereby declare that the following -is a full1 clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accornpainy;I ng drawings, and to the lettersof reference marked thereon. The nature vof my invention consists in an adjustment, in 'the back, of a suspender; and, also, i-n providing suspender-straps with a lining of cloth er other lsuitable material. l i y In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and oplfratiou, referring to the annexed drawings, which form apart of thisspecification, and in which-L Figure .l is a side View, and Figure 2, an edge view. A A represent two suspender-s fastened together at the back, and from the point of fastening, asitrap, B, made of' web or leather, extends. t
On the strap l5 is placed a buckle, C, having.,r tivo straps D I), which are to be buttoned to the pauta# loons. i .l i
On the under side of the strap B is a lining, E, of cloth or other suitable material, which isastegl dto the upper and lower ends of the strap, alldwinthe buckle to be moved'up and down between the 'strap and lining. i v
The main object of an attached or fastened-togetlier suspender is to keep it on the form or shoplders when the coat and rest isoti", and lit the form sg its toiwear easy, which object cannot be attained withouf thev fastening is'adjusted to the form. l
It is very important that the angle of the suspender should be right, in order that' it may stay on theform properly when a man is at work with coat audit-'est off; but no mat-ter what the angleyis, thereis but one natural' or right place for-'the fastening to come on the form, and that is, so that the shoulder-strap may draw right orfnatural place onv the perfectly true or straight from the 4fastening over the 'form or shoulder, and then, if the angle ot' the suspender is correct, it will both t and stay on the form perfectly.
If the fastening is brought too high on the form, the web curls on the outside at the fastening, and there is lno fit, consequently there is a continual draw or unnatural strain of the suspender on the form.
If the fastening is brought too low on the form, the web curls on the inside at the fastening, and there liss again no tit, and' not only the unnatural draw or strain ofthe suspender, but a much worse diculty to con-v tend with, namely, the suspender spreads and throws the shoulder-strap to the point of the shoulder, so that it cannot suspender was designed, namely, to stay on the shoulder when the wearer is-at work with coat and vest ofi, and makes it much worse,- in that respect, than a separate suspender. 'V
By having the adjustment in the back, I am enabled to bring the fastening to the vright or natural place on the forni, and to vary'the length of the suspender according to the length of the wearer.
The lining E serves as a protection ofthe form and clothing from the wear andtarnish of the buckle, and
can be applied to theiront as well asthe back part of the suspender.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-l ters Patent, is.-
rlhe arrangement of the elastic straps A A,- leather pieee B, lining E, looped buckle C, and straps D I), all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the forcgoing, I have hereunto set my ,hand and seal, this 21st day 0f April, 1869. 4
