BOLSTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, '199th Application filed September 25, 1908. Serial No. A55,085.
To all whom 'it may concern: Be itknown that l, HEJRY F. Porn, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of hio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bolsters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings., forming part of this specification, in which- I Figure l is a-Aplan view of structed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line lll-lll of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line llV-IV of Fig. l. v
' The purpose of my invention is to provide applicable to radial for the purpose of C, sills in advance of the rear -face of the bolster. By thus dispensing with center sills, a free-space is afforded in advance of the holster for the lateral radial motion of the draft gear. The 'construction is ,simple and very strong and eicient.
Although applicable especially draft gears, my invention isl not limited thereto, nor is it limitedto a construction in which intermediate sills in front of the holster are employed, for such sills between a bolster condraft gears, and useful dispensing with centerthe holster and the end sill may be used, still retaining the benefits'of my tion of itsl front face a invention and enabling the bu'ling strains to be transmitted from the draft gear through the-bolster and directly to the ends of the center sills.
My invention is an improvement upon the bolster shown in an, application for which I have already filed'llettersPatent on Angust (i, 1908, Serial Number 447,307.
ln the drawings, l show a body bolster but the invention 1s not limited to the integral construction of the bolster.
2 is the bolster having at the middle porlug 3, whichis preff erably cast integral with the bolster, al-
though it may be made separate and attached thereto. lt is adapted for the pivotal attachment of the radial draft gear, purpose it is preferably provided with an angular recess Al, for the reception of a bushto radial and for this' ing which receives the pivotv4 pin of the draft n gear and takes up wear from the Lug. This bushing can be readily replaced when it. is worn. On the rear face of the bolster is a middle rearward extension 5, of such shape and cross-sectional dimensions as to tit between the center sills 6, to which it is secured by rivets T. It acts as a 'spacing piece for the center. sills and is a means for fixing vthem rigidly to the bolster',
so vthat the stresses of batting will be transmitted directly through the bolster to these sills. y
Gn the front face of the bolster are brach ets 8, one on each side of the pivotal lug 3, and these brackets are preferably cast in- `tegral with the bolster, although they may be made separate and attached thereto. as desired. and supporta carry-iron t), which extends trai'isversely from one bracket to the other in front of the pivot lug 3 and bel-ow the plane thereof, and serves as a carry-iron or support for ther-ear end'of the radial draft tar.
lhedraft gear is pivotally attached to the f lug, is supported at the rear end by the carry iron and transmits the'stresses of hailing directly through the lug and bolster to the center sills, as above described.
Modifications in the invention may he made by those skilled in the art, since What l claim is:
l. A car bolster having on its front face a pivotal connection for a draft gear and a carry-iron fixed to the holsterand extending in front of the pivotal connection.
2. A car bolster having on its front face bracket-s, and a carry-iron connecting the brackets extending below the plane of the draft. gear.
3. A bolster having at its rear side an attachment for center sills, on its front c a pivotal connection for a 'radial di and a carry-iron extending in front pivotal connection.
ln testimony whereof, l have 'my hand.
hereunto set HENRY POEE.
lvitnesses vHilmar nn, l?. YV. SwnNs'roN.
These brackets project forwardly.
