EDWARD W. NEWELL, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE WESTING- HOUSE AIR BRAKE COMPANY, OF WILMERDING, PENNSYLVANIA, A. CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
DRAFT-RIGGING.
Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
Original application led August 17,'1915, Serial No. 45,878. Divided and this application led February J 21, 1917. Serial No. 150,063.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. NEWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in DraftgRigging, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to draft gears, and has for its principal object to provide means lo for equalizing the transmission of stresses from the draw-bar to the draft gear, the present application being a division of application, Serial No. 45,878,1iled August 17, 1915.
In the accompanyin drawin Fi re 1 is a vertical longitudinl sectiong of tlil forward portion of a draft gear connected to a draw-bar and illustrating an application of my invention, and Fig. 2 a horizontal 2o section of the construction shown in Fig. l.
My invention-may be applied in conneetion with any desired type of draft gear and in the drawing the reference numeral 1 indicates a member of a draft gear adapted to engage the draw-bar 2, the draft 'gear being inc osed between the car center sills 3 in the usual manner.
Draft stresses are transmitted from the draw-bar 2 to the draft gear throuvh a key 4 connected to the draw-bar 2 andb extending through elongated slots 5' formed in the draft gear links 6.
In order to permit a lateral movement of the draw-bar 2 without disturbin the normal relation of the key 4 to the llnks 6 and thereb equalize the stresses transmitted to the dra gear, bushings 7 are interposed between the key 4 and the draw-bar 2.
The bushings 7 are adapted to t over the front and rear portions of the key and are provided with outer horizontal convex faces adapted to engage corresponding concave faces 8 formed in the draw-bar, as shown in the draw-bar to the draft gear will exert substantially equal forces on opposite sides of the key.
The same action will be secured where a yoke is employed in place of the links 6, as
will be evident.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a draw-bar and a draft gear, of a key for connecting the draw-bar to the draft gear and bushingsv for supporting the key in the draw-bar, said l EDWARD W. N EWELL.
