FRANCIS 1V[. ROSS ANI) JOHN A. WARD, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
COMBINED MATCH-BOX AND CIG-AR-CUTTER.
Speciieation of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1909.
Application led November 21, 1908. Serial No. 463,827.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANCIS M. Ross and JOHN A. WARD, citizens of the United States, residing' at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of lvashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Match-Box and Cigar- Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined match boxes and cigar cutters and has special reference to an automatic machine combining the action of cutting a cigar and delivering a match.
An object of this invention is to form a machine which will deliver a match simultaneously with the cutting` of the cigar tip.
Another object is to construct a device of this character that will not injure the cigar by too strong a pressure upon the end being cut in order to actuate the knife blade and to deliver the match.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device that will be simple in construction and durable in its parts, for a device of this nature is of no practical use where there is a complication of parts as it is used in stores where it is subject to rough usage and where it would involve great and useless expense to keep it in repair.
A still further obj ect is to produce a small compact device which will be of light weight so that a traveling salesman would be enabled to carry a number of the same with him.
Gther objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the sev .eral views, Figure 1 is a top plan view with the cover of the match receptacle removed, Fig. 2 is a cross section of the match receptacle and delivering device, F ig. 8 is a side elevation of the cigar cutter with the side removed, Fig. t is a front elevation of the device, the front wall being removed.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates one of the sides of the match the back, 12 the opposite side and 13 the front. The front 13 extends downwardlyr from the top 14 centrally of the sides 1() and 12 where it is in frictional contact with the periphery of a cylinder 15. The cylinder 15 is horizontally mounted between said sides 10 and 12 on a shaft 16 and the cylinder 15 is provided with a longitudinal groove 17 at one portion in its surface. Said sides 10 and 12 extend forwardly at their lower portions beyond the cylinder 15 to support a match receiving tray 31 secured therebetween. An obliquely disposed bottom 18 is secured between said sides extending from the upper end of the back 11 downwardly to the cylinder 15 where it frictionally engages the same. At the opposite corners of the lower edge of the bottom 18 two arms 20 are formed which are depended and apertured to engage over studs 21 formed eccentrically upon the opposite ends of the cylinder 15. The arms 2O are employed for the purpose of oscillating the bottom 18 to close the spa-ce between the front 13 and the periphery of the cylinder 15. The bottom 18 is spaced at its lower end from the front 18 a distance equal to the distance through which the cylinder revolves for the purpose of closing the passage between the 'bottom 18 and the front 13. l
The shaft 16 which supports the cylinder 15 extends longitudinally through the side 12 where a crank shaft 19 is formed integrally with the shaft 16. Surrounding said crank shaft 19 is a boxing 23' having its upper edge disposed at an incline toward the front of the machine and which supports a pivoted cover or top 211 having formed therein .an aperture 25 for the reception of an end of a cigar. The top 21 is provided with a depending flange 26 formed upon its front end and upon its outer edge.
A spring 30 is positioned between the inner wall of the front 18 and the under side of the cylinder 15 for tensionally holding the cylinder 15 in such position as to nor mally retain the groove 17 adjacent the lower edge of the bottom 18 at the rear of the front 13 into which a match is adapted to drop from the bottom 18. By the action of the spring 30 the crank shaft 19 is normally pressed upward against the edge of receptacle, 11
the front flange 26 causing said top 24 to be forced and held upward at an incline against a cleat 27 disposed upon the outer face of the side 12. Mounted upon the rear lower end of the boxing 23 is a cutter blade 29 which is formed of spring metal and which is forced upward against the under side of the top 24 adjacent the aperture 25. The cutter blade 29 is obliquely disposed across the under side of the top 24 so as to present a sliding knife edge to the aperture 25. Upon the depression of the top 24 the cutter 29 is caused to be forced forward in sliding contact wiht the under side of the top 24. The top 24 is suitably pivoted at its rear end between the outer side of the boxing 23 and the side 12.
In operation and use, matches are placed in the match receptacle upon the obliquely disposed bottom 1S and the lowermost match falls into the groove 17 in the cylinder 15 in readiness for delivery. The end of a cigar is placed in the aperture 25 of the top 24 and pressed downward. The flange 2G which is abutting against the end of the crank shaftl 19 depresses said crank shaft 19 and causes the partial rotation of the shaft 1G rotating the cylinder 15 and delivering the match in the groove 17 onto the tray 31 where the user can take it. Immediately upon the release of the top 24 the spring 80 returns the cylinder 15 and the top 24 to their normal positions. When the top 24 is depressed the cutter blade 29 is caused to move forward against the under side of the top 24 and to pass under the aperture 25, to engage the butt of the inserted cigar to cut the same, against the tension of the spring 30. When the top 24 is released and the crank shaft 19 is actuated to return the top 24 to its normal position against the cleat 27 the cutter blade 29 is permitted to return to its substantially vertical position under its own tension.
The forward and upward movement of the bottom 18 produces an effect of preventing the clogging or binding of the matches in the receptacle as well as the continuous and regular feed of the same.
