Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 24, 1908.
Application filed April 11, 1907. Serial No. 367,606.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ZANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain match holder, lighter and cigar cutter.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character adapted to contain matches and provided with a mechanism by means of which one match at a time may be ejected from the machine and simultaneously ignited.
Another object is to provide a device of this character having arranged thereon a cigar cutter.
With. the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of one side of the machine with the casing removed; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the opposite side; Fig. 4 is a top plan view. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the hopper and match lighting mechanism showing the parts in an inoperative position; Fig.6 is a similar view showing the parts in an operative'position to project and light a match; Fig. 7 is a vertical cross-sectional view through the hopperand frame of the machine; and Fig. 8 is an inner side view of one of the walls of the casing showing the arrangement of the cigar cutting mechanism thereon.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the machine which consists of a suitable base 2 upon which the operating mechanism is mounted. At one end of the base 2 adjacent to one of the side edges thereof is arranged an upwardly-projecting standard 3 having on its upper end a match receptacle or hopper 1, said hopper being provided with an inclined side wall 5 by means of which the matches contained thereon will be guided and directed toward the lower contracted discharge passage 6 in the bottom of the hopper, the width of said passage being such as to permit the entrance of but one match at a time from the hopper. The matches in discharging from the hopper into the passage 6 rest upon the bottom wall 7 of said passage in position to be ejected therefrom by a suitable ejecting mechanism hereinafter described.
Arranged on the forward edge of the standard 3 at the end of the passage 6 is an igniting mechanism consisting of a casing 8 having arranged therein a lower stationary scratching block 9, the upper edge of which is serrated or roughened. In the casing 8 above the block 9 is )ivotally mounted a movable scratching block or jaw 10, the lower edge of which is roughened or serrated whereby when the head of the match is rojected between said blocks, the same w' 1 be ignited.
The upper scratching block 10 is held in yielding engagement with the lower block 9 by a plunger rod 12 which is slidably mounted in the upper end of the casing 8 and in a guide bracket 13 and is engaged at its upper end by a spring 14, the tension of which is eX- erted to force the plunger rod downward thereby holding the upper block 10 into engagement with the lower block 9. The plunger rod 12 and spring 14 are inclosed within a suitable casing 15 arranged on the end of the hopper above the casing 8. The upper block 10 is disposed at an angle to the lower block with its outer end held in yielding engagement therewith, thereby forming a tapering space between the blocks, the center of said tapering space being opposite to a discharge aperture 16 formed in the adjacent edge wall of the passage 16 so that when a match is projected through said aperture from the passage 6, the head of the same will be forced into the tapering space between the scratching blocks 9 and 10 and into engagement with the meeting edges of said blocks forcing the upper pivoted block upwardly and permitting the match to be projected on through a discharge opening in the outer edge of the casing 8 when said match may be taken from the holder. The frictional engagement of the head of the match. in passing between the scratch blocks 9 and 10 is sufficient to ignite the match as it is projected from the holder. The match when thus projected and lighted maybe taken from the holder or allowed to remain held thereby in position to light a cigar.
The match ejecting mechanism comprises a plunger rod 17 having its forward end slidably mounted in a bearing sleeve 18 on the inner edge of the standard 3, said edge being provided with a hole opposite to said bearing sleeve to permit the entrance of the plunger into the passage 6 to engage the end of the lowermost match in said passage and to force said match outwardly through the discharge aperture 16 .and. between the scratching blocks 9 and 10 as hereinbefore described. The opposite or outer end of the plunger rod 17 is connected to and supported by a vertically-disposed rod 19, the lower end of which is connected to a shoe 20 slidably engaged with a guide track 21 arranged on the base 2 of the machine.
Mounted in suitable bearing standards 22 arranged on the base 2 is an operating shaft 23, said shaft having on one end a right-angularly-projecting crank arm 24, the free end of which is connected by a link rod 25 to the adjacent end of the plunger rod 17. The opposite end of the shaft 23 is provided with a crank arm 26 which extends in an opposite direction to the arm 24 and is connected at its lower end to an operating bar 27, the forward end of which is pivotally connected to an operating lever 28 pivotally mounted in a suitable bearing standard 29 on the forward end of the frame 2. The lower end of the crank arm 26 is also connected to a coiled. spring 30, the opposite end of which is connected to the base 2 of the machine. The tension of the spring 30 isjexerted to restore the match ejecting mechanism to its normal position after the pressure upon the lever 28 has been removed. The lever 28 is provided with a suitable push-button or knob 31 by means of which the same may be conveniently operated. l/Vhen the lever 28 is reversed, the operating bar 27 will rock the shaft 23 causing the latter to project the rod 17 thereby forcing one match from the hopper, as hereinbefore described.
Arranged in the hopper 4 on the vertical rear wall of the same are match holding fingers 32 which are connected at their upper ends by a cross-bar 33 which is loosely pivotally mounted midway between its ends to the upper end of an operating lever 34 pivotally mounted on the rear outer side of the hopper, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawin s. The upper end of the lever 34 is pivotal y connected to the cross-bar 33 of the fingers 32 through a relatively wide slot 35 formed in the adjacent Wall of the hopper as shown. The lower end of the lever 34 is pivotally connected to the forward end of the operating bar 36, the opposite end of which is pivotally connected to a link 37, said link being pivotally connected at its upper end to a standard or post 38 on the base of the machine. The link 37 is pro to swing the match engaging fingers upwardly from into engagement with the matches in the passage 6.
After the pressure from the operating lever 28 is removed the lever 34 is retracted by: means of the coiled spring 40, which is connected at one end to the link 37 and at its other end to the base 2. When the lever 34 is in this retracted position the fingers 32 are at their lowest position, and yieldingly press Tj .downwardly the matches in the hopper. 6, 5
thereby holding the lowermost match against the bottom wall of the passage in position to be engaged by the plunger rod 17, thus preventing said rod from being forced over or? under the match. l/Vhen a match. has been ejected far enough for the scratch blocks 9 and 10 alone to hold the same in position against the plunger, the rod 19 will engage the pin 39 as above described, and cause theji fingers 32 to recede upwardly far enough for one or more matches to fall from the receptacle beneath the fingers into the hopper 6. The pressure on the lever 28 is then removed, and the downward pressure of the fingers 32 is resumed.
The bearing standards 22 are firmly supported upon the base 2 by suitable brace rods 41. The operating mechanism is inclosed in a suitable casing 42 on one side of? which adjacent to the operating lever 28 is arranged a finger rest or grip 43 which is adapted to be engaged by the fingers of the operator when pressing the lever 28 downwardly. The hopper 4 is provided with ai? slidably mounted cover 44 inclosing the up per end thereof.
Pivotally mounted on the inner wall of one side of the casing is a cigar cutting blade 45, the forward end of which projects through a; 3 slot 46 in the end of the casing and is bent laterally at right-angles and then forwardly to provide an operating lever 47 on the outer end of which is arranged a push-button or knob 48. The lower edge of the blade 45 is: beveled and is adapted to coact with a stationary cutting blade 49 secured to the inner wall of said side of the casing opposite to a hole 50 formed therein through which the tip of the cigar is adapted to be inserted, whereby when said blade is pushed downwardly by the lever 47, said inserted end of the cigar will be clipped off. The blade 45 is normally held up in an inoperative position by means of a fiat bowed spring 51 en gaged with the under side of the blade at one structed as herein shown and described will be strong, durableand comparatively simple in construction, reliable and eflicient in operation and well adapted for the purposes for which it is designed.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is,
1. A device of the character described comprising a base, a match hopper arranged on said base, a plunger adapted to eject a match from said hopper, a rod depending from the rear end of said plunger, a guide to slidably receive the lower end of said rod, a guiding mechanism whereby the match ej ected from said hopper is lighted, pivoted means to hold the matches against the bottom of the hopper, a lever secured to said pivoted means, a pin laterally projecting from said depending rod, a depending lever adapted to be swung by contact with said pin when said rod and plunger are moved, and alink con necting said depending lever and the lever secured to said pivoted means whereby said pivoted means is swung when said pin moves said depending lever.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base, a match hopper arranged on said base, a plunger adapted to eject a match from said hopper, a rod rigidly connected to and depending from and supporting the rear end of said plunger, a guide to slidably receive the lower end of said rod, a guiding mechanism whereby the match ejected from said hopper is lighted, pivoted means to hold the matches against the bottom of the hopper, a lever secured to said pivoted means, a pin laterally projecting from said depending rod, a depending lever adapted to be swung by contact with said pin when said rod and plunger are moved, and a link connecting said depending lever and the lever secured. to said pivoted means whereby said pivoted means is swung when said pin moves said depending lever.
3. A device of the character described comprising a base, a match hopper arranged on said base, a plunger adapted to eject a match from said hopper, a rod rigidly connected to and depending from and supporting the rear end of said plunger, a guide to slidably receive'the lower end ofsaid rod, a guiding mechanism whereby the match ejected from said hopper is lighted, and means to hold the matches against the bottom of the hopper in position to be acted upon by the plunger, and operating means therefor, con sisting of a lever fastened thereto, a second lever pivoted to said base, a link connecting the free ends of said levers and a laterally projecting means on said depending rod adapted to contact said second lever.
