Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1909.
Application filed December 23, 1908. Serial No. 468,933.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Lucas MARRION SEAY,
. a citizen of the United States, residing at Havana, in the county of Mason and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates and mechanism for opening and closing the same, and comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gate,
\ parts being in section in order to better illustrate features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View showing the cable connections with the gate and pulleys for operating the same, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, AA designate standards which are mounted vertically, preferably in the ground, and are spaced apart a sufficient distance to allow the gates to freely slide back and forth between the same. Said standards support a housing B which is closed upon all sides, excepting its bottom, and C designates a track, the ends of which are threaded and pass through apertures in the end walls of the housing, and nuts C are mounted upon the threaded ends of said track in the manner shown in the drawings and serve to securely hold the track in place and which will be protected by the housing. The gates are designated in the drawings by letter D, each of which has end gate posts D upon each side of the gate, as shown clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and E is a shaft passing through the upper ends of said posts above said track and upon which shaft is journaled a grooved sheave E adapted to ride upon said track. Each gate has two of said sheaves similarly mounted as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A crank shaft, designated in the drawings by letter G, is journaled in suitable bearings in the post H and one of said standards A and has a grooved pulley J fixed thereto, preferably at one side of the gates and between the standards or supports A. A cable, designated in the drawings by letter N, passes about the pulley J, thence over a sheave O, which is journaled upon a pin 0 upon one of the standards A, thence passes to the arms M of the yoke M carrying the pulley lVP, shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings. A second cable N is fastened to the arm, thence passes over a sheave 0 also mounted upon one of said standards and thence back to the post D at the inner end of one of the gates and fastened to a bail-shaped projection 0 upon the yoke 0, shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
A grooved sheave I is mounted upon a pin I carried by the yoke O and rides upon said track 0. The yoke O has a laterally extending arm 0 to which the other end of the cable N is fastened, which cable thence extends over the pulley 0 about the pulley tightener L, thence about the pulley J. Said pulley tightener L revolves loosely upon a shaft S having bearing blocks S which are movably held in slots T formed in two of the standards A, and a spring I is fastened to each end of said shaft S and its other end to a pin W and affords means for holding the bearings of said shaft S yieldingly so that the pulley J may be held in proper frictional engagement with the cable N when said pulley J is turned in one direction or the other, accordingly as it may be desired to cause the two gates to open or close.
In operation, it will be understood that, by merely turning the crank shaft in one direction or the other, the two gates may be rolled back, opened or closed, as will be readily understood.
What I claim to be new is 1. A gate apparatus comprising standards, a housing support therefor, a track mounted in the ends of said housing, gates having end posts, sheaves carried by the latter and mounted upon said tracks, yokes fastened to the posts at the adjacent ends of the gates, sheaves upon said standards, a grooved pulley and crank shaft upon which the same is mounted, a cable winding about said pulley and one of said sheaves, the ends of said cable being connected one to each of said yokes, a second cable fastened to an arm of one of said yokes, a sheave over which said second cable passes, the latter being fastened to a bail-shaped portion of the other of said yokes, and means for keeping said cables taut, as set forth.
2. A gate apparatus comprising standards, a housing support therefor, a track mounted in the ends of said housing, gates having end posts, sheaves carried by the latter and mounted upon said tracks, yokes fastened to the posts at the adjacent ends of the gates, sheaves upon said standards, a grooved pulley and crank shaft upon which the same is mounted, a cable winding about said pulley and one of said sheaves, the ends of said cable being connected one to each of said yokes, a second cable fastened to an arm of one of said yokes, a sheave over which said second cable passes, the latter being fastened to a bail-shaped portion of the other of said yokes, a vertically movable idler bearing against said cable, and means for guiding the idler in its vertical movement, as set forth.

A gate apparatus comprising standards, a housing support therefor, a track mounted in the ends of said housing, gates having end posts, sheaves carried by the latter and mounted upon said tracks, yokes fastened to,the posts at the adjacent ends of the gates, sheaves upon said standards, a grooved pulley and crank shaft upon which the same is mounted, a cable winding about said pulley and one of said sheaves, the ends of said cable being connected one to each of said yokes, a second cable fastened to an arm of one of said yokes, a sheave over which said second cable passes, the latter being fastened to a bail-shaped ortion of the other of said yokes, bearing b ocks having vertical movements in slots in two of said oppositely disposed standards, a shaft mounted in said bearing blocks, and a belt tightener carried by said shaft and adapted to bear against one of said cables, as set forth.
4. A gate apparatus comprising standards, a housing support therefor, a track mounted in the ends of said housing, gates having end posts, sheaves carried by the latter and' mounted upon said tracks, yokes fastened to the posts at the adjacent ends of the gates, sheaves upon said standards, a. grooved pulley and crank shaft upon which the same is mounted, a cable winding about said pulley and one of said. sheaves, the ends of said cable being connected one to each of said yokes, a second cable fastened to an arm of one of said yokes, a sheave over which said second cable passes, the latter being fastened to a bail-shaped portion of the other of said yokes, biaring blocks having vertical movements in slots in two of said oppositely disposed standards, a shaft mounted in said bearing blocks, a belt tightener carried by said shaft and adapted to bear against one of said cables, and springs fastened to said shaft and also to projections upon said slotted standards, as set forth.
5. In combination with a housing and standards therefor, a track supported in the ends of said housing, gates having end posts, pulleys journaled at the upper ends of said end gate posts and riding upon said track, yokes fastened to the pulleys at the adjacent ends of the gates, each of said yokes having a laterally projecting arm with an eye therein, one of said yokes having a horizontally extending bail-shaped member, a pulley fixed to said crank shaft at one side of the gates, a grooved sheave also mounted at one side of the gate and about which said cable passes, the ends of said cable being fastened one to each eye and the end of the arms of said yoke, a second cable fastened at one end to one of said eyes, a sheave upon one of said standards over which said second cable passes, the other end of the latter fastened to said bail-shaped member, and a spring-actuated idler bearing against one of said cables, as set forth.
