To all 'whom 'it may concern:

' Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. LEAoH, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shoes, of which the iiollowing is a specification.

This invention relates'to shoes, and particularly to low-cut shoes especially adapted for use as bathing shoes.

lhe object of the invention is to produce a shoe without a front opening, which may be easily drawn onto the foot of the wearer and which will snugly iit the foot.

Fig. 4 is a detail of one of the parts composing the upper.

The upper comprises twopieces a and b ot textile material, such for instance as hfnitted fabric known in the tradev as stockinette. These pieces are similarly shaped and each comprises a vamp and quarter portions see Fig. 4. The two pieces are secured together by rubber cement, which entirely covers the adjacent sides of the pieces,` and o represents the interposed layer of rubber cement. At the top of the upper around the o ening for the insertion of the foot, a rubber band al of substantial thickness is inserted 'between the two pieces a and b.

At the heel end ofthe upper a counter e of text-lle material is inserted between the two pieces a and I), which Aextends from the top to. the bottom thereof, or thereabouts, and sald counter is secured to said pieces by rubber cement laid upon both sides of it, so

that the heel end of the upper is stiifened materially by the additional rubber cement whlch is interposed between the two pieces a. and b, and also by the counter, and a suitable `shape is given to the heel end of the u per which is permanently maintained.` Said counter when interposed between the two pieces a and b extends across the opening formed by the meeting edges of the ends of the quarterl pieces, and thereby securely holds said edges together. The up er, when completed, is applied to a last having thereou an inner sole f composed of textile material, the edge ofthe uv per extending over and being secured to t sole by' rubber cement, and then the outer sole g is applied which is also com osed of textile material, and said outer so e is secured to the upper and inner sole by rubber cement. The outer sole has on its under or exposed side by a layer of rubber g.

The shoe when completed is placed in a vulcanizer and vulcanized, and the interosed layers 'of rubber cement and rubber ecome integrally formed, and as a result a very strong and durable shoe is produced which may be easily applied to the foot of the wearer and which will snugly cling to e edge of the inner the footand will maintain its shape. The

rubber is used in the form of cement merely for ease in application, but it may be used in any other forni.

It will be notedr that when the shoe is vulcanized the counter is embedded inthe interposed rubber layer connecting the elastic band at the top of the upper with' the heel.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A shoe consisting of an upper composed of two similarly shaped pieces of textile material, each comprising a vamp and quarter pieces, the edges of the quarter pieces meeting at the heel, a layer of rubber interposed between said pieces by which they are attached together,- a counter inter-- posed between said pieces at the heel which is embedded in an interposed layer of rubber thereat, an inner-solelof textile material and an `outer-sole of textile material, and an interposed layer of rubber between said soles in which the edge of the upper is embedded, and by which said upper, inner-sole and' outer-sole are attached together, and'a layer of rubber on the exposed side of sald outer-sole, the shoe being vulcanized' and the several layers of rubber being integrally formed, substantially as described.

A shoe consisting ofan -upper com-` posed of two similarly shaped pieces of textile material, each comprising a vamp and quarter pieces, the edges of the quarter pieces meeting at the heel, a layer of rubber interposed betweensaid pieces by whlch they are attached together, a narrow'band of rubber interposed between said parts at the top, a counter interposed between said pieces at the heel which is embedded 1n the interposed layer of rubber thereet, and eX- tends to the rubber band, an inner-sole of textile material and an outer-Sole of textile material, and an interposed layer of rubber between said soles in which the edge of the I 10 vulcanized and the several layers of rubber being integrally formed, substantially ns described.
