RUBBER SOLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1914.
Application filed May 11, 1914.. Serial No. 837,616.
applied to shoes such. as worn by athletes,
such soles being desirable on account of their elastic properties, and the object of the invention is to provide improved reinforcing means therefor.
My invention is clearly illustrated on the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is an under side view of a rubber sole with my improved reinforce applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view on plane 2-2, Fig.1.
The sole shown comprises the ball section 10, the heel section 11 and the instep 12, the sole bein preferably of a single piece of Xtending adjacent to but set inwardly a distance from the edge of the sole at the ball and heel sections respectively are the grooves 13 and 14 in which are inserted the reinforcing bands 15 and 16. These reinforcing bands may be of any suitable material such as canvas or leather and are preferably set with their outer faces flush with the tread surface of the sole and are vulcanized securely into their grooves to form an intimate part of the sole. By having the grooves inside of the sole edge the sole, when viewed from the sides will have the appearance of being entirely of rubber. Furthermore, the reinforcing strips will be better protected and can be more intimately vulcanized to the sole. If desired, suction pockets 17 can be provided.
The insertion of reinforcing material into rubber soles in the manner described will not impair the elasticity or friction properties of the rubber sole but the sole will be greatly strengthened and wear of the rubber retarded. By vulcanizing the reinforcing material to the rubber such material becomes an intimate part of the sole and will not loosen.
I do not of course desire to be limited to the exact arrangement shown as modifications may be possible which would still come within the scope of the claim which is the following:
A rubber sole having a groove herein parallel with its edge but set inwardly a distance therefrom,- and reinforcing material seated entirely within said groove with its outer face flush with the tread surface of the sole and vulcanized into said groove to form an intimate partof the sole.
In witness whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 5 day of May A. D. 1914, at Chicago, Illinois.
