ROBERT A. PITMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO TACONY IRON COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYL- VANIA.
PERMANENT TWO-PART METAL MOLD.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, Romnrr A. PITMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia. in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Permanent Two-Part Metal Molds, of which the following is a. specification.
My invention has relation to means for i poising and manipulating quickly the opening and closing of a permanent sectional metal mold for making different kinds or types. of castings such as tubings, fittings etc., a familiar example of such castings being found in United States Letters Patent No. 870,817, dated November 12th, 1907, granted to Edgar A. (luster, as Well as in subsequent patents and applications for patents ofthe said Custer for making such general character of castings.
The princi a-l object of my present invention for map oyment in connection with the (luster system of; making homogeneous and other character of metal castings depending npon'iutermil forn' ations of the two-part molds,is to prdvirle means for poising suspended hinged sections of the mold in order to be easily manipulated for quickly opening and closing the mold. This case of manipulation'of the mold being accomplished by so poising the parts or-sections of the mold at such pointsj'and in a manner as that in opening, the parts or. sections are uniformly balanced one section against the other.
My invention stated in'general terms, consists of a. suspended permanent sectional metal mold' provided with )oising means and shifting devices 211' 'anged by the shifting, of quick opening and closing of thetwoparts or sections of the mold, to respectively, permit first-of the pouring of molten metal into the interior thereof and second of the freeing of thccast or set structure, therefrom. i
The nature, scope and characteristic general features of my present invention willbe more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which i v Figure 1, is a side elevational view of a suspended metal sectionalmold embodying clmracteristic main features of my invention, this view showing the parts or sections of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 80, 1908. Serial No. 470,008.
Patented July 13, 1909.
the mold in respectively two different positions, closed and 0 en, with respective posir tions of the shifting devices and poising means in their relations to each other, in
said defined positions of the sectional mold; and Fig. 2, 1s a top or plan view of the suspended secitional permanent metal mold, in
a closed position.
Referring to the drawings a, a are two vertical standards with extensions a a, as
clearly shown in Fig. 1. The standard a, at-
the top is provided with a movable latching device a, for being brought mto and out of engagement with a lever-arm Z1 of a hinged sectional metal mold B. This mold B, as shown, is composed of two complemental parts or sections 6, 6 of rectangular shape, hinged at b 6 to each other. The interiors of the two-parts or sections of the mold are provided with recesses to form together a suitable cavity 6*, and having channelways leading thereto, not shown, from the pourholes I), b, as shown in Fig. 2, arranged at suitable distances apart about the meeting ends of one part or section of the mold with the other part thereof.
In each of the extensions (1 c of the standards a, a are provided preferably dctachable roller-bearings c, c, for engaging journals b, I), of the part or section Z), of
the. mold B, for easily or sensitively poising the said sectional metal mold in a suspended jeondition from the standards, as fully shown in' Fig. 2. From the part I), of the mold on .both sides project journals. c'arrying rollers I)", Z), for by shifting one part or section of the mold with respect to the other, as fully shown in Fig. 1, the said rollers riding along the rear vertical edges or bearings of the vertical standards (1 (1 assume respectively, diti'erent positions on the standards edges or bearings according to the position of the one part of the mold with respect to the other thereof. The functional object of permitting the riding of the rollers I), along the standards, in the opem ing and closing of the sections of the mold, is to prevent the section Z), of the mold B, falling forward onto the section b, but other arrangements for accomplishing the same rcsnlt may be substituted for that specifically described and shown. hen the sectional mold B, is in a closed position, as shown in Fig, 1, the lever-arm I), will occupy a locked position 'in engagement with the latching device a On the other hand when in an open position the lever-arm 5 will assume the broken line longitudinal position in Fig. 1, with the part 5 of the mold elevated into an angular relation with respect to the part 7), as shown in broken outline in Fig. l for removing the structure set while the twoparts of the moldB was in a closed condition, by simply opening the same in the manner hereinbefore explained. In the practice of the said Custer castings system referred to, it is desirable to be able to so manipulate the sectional metal mold as that almost the instant pouring of the molten metal into the mold has been accomplished the mold can be easily opened to free the structure set in the mold therefrom and to do this with facility, that is, without undue labor is the object of my invention by so poising the suspended sectional. mold so that simply manipulating the lever-arm 5 of one part of the mold will either quickly close or open the same. In the one instance -to permit of the pouring of the molten metal into the mold and in the other to liberate the structure cast from the mold in order that the homogeneity established may'be insured and the qualities of the structure for subsequent machining or threading be had.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, What I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is l. The combination with standards having bearing-means, of a sectional metal mold having journals arranged to engage said hearing-means to support the mold in a sensitive suspended condition and provided with traveler bearings for riding the standards and with means to open and close the sectional mold, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination. with standards having roller bearing-means, of a sectional permanent metal mold provided with journals arranged to engage said means so as to suport said mold in a sensitive suspended :ondition, means connected with one section of the mold to open and close the sections of said mold and means connected with the mold to prevent when the sections are parted from oneanother, the same falling onto one another, substantially as and for the purposes described 3. The combination with standards having extensions provided with hearingmeans, a sectional metal mold having journals arranged to engage said means to supportthe mold in a sensitive suspended condition and provided with traveler bearings for riding the standards, a device for opening and closing the sectional mold and means for locking and unlocking said device, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4:. The combination with standards having bearing-means, a permanent sectional mold having traveler means, journals and a lever-arm, said journals engaging said bearing-means, said traveler means adapted to ride said standards and said. lever-arm adapted to open and close said sectional mold and a device connected with one of said standards and arranged for latching said lever-arm, substantially as and for the purposes described.
ln witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
