Letters Patent li o. 67,181, dated July 30, 1867; I
IMPROVEMENT In MOULDS PIOR CASTING METAL.
":To ALL' w [10M IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known-that we, Join: Fs'rtmn and WILLuu Gnorss,'of Providence, in the county-of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, hare invented an Improvement in Flasks for Casting Pipes and other similar articles;
and dohereby declartTthat the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
The nature ofour inventi'on consists in making the flasks for casting water pipes and other cylindrical articles in three or more longitudinal sections, and also in an improved lining for such flasks, by means of which their durability is very much increased, and a great number of pipes or other articles may be cast in the same without arenewal of the lining at each casting, .as' in those now employed. 7
I To enable those skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construe tion and operation. In the drawing I Figures 1 and 2 represent cross-sections of the flask, and Figure 3 a perspective View of a longitudinal section. I I The flask is shown'as closed in fig. 1, and as opened in fig. 2, the sections A A A, of which it is composed, being hinged together as shown, or otherwise secured when used for casting.
A is the outer case, made of metal, wood, or other suitable material. b I) are small openings in the same for the escape ot' the gases. B is a lining, about thrce-eighths of an inch thick, composed of moulding-sand, I
coarse gravel, and broken cindcrs, mixed to a pasteqvit-h elaynvater, and applied as shown in the drawing, filling the orifices I: b, which serves to keep this lining in place. 0 is another lining, formed of finer materials.
I We preferlabout two parts of burnt clay pulverized,- with one part of 'plu'mbago, to be applied by mixing to a paste with clay-water, and when dry' to be well polished with plumbagoi Tlle coating C is to be about one-' eighth of amick, the two linings B and 0 being held in plac'elnnd their edges protected by the flanges or strips a a, which we either make very thin or wcdge shaped', as shown. D is the core, to be used in cas ting pipes; and E is thetunnel through which the metal is to be poured, which is also linctl witltthe composition previously described.
I The arrangement consisting of the outer case A andlinings l3 and C, with the flanges or strips a e, may also be used in a flask of two parts but there is less danger of damage to the interior lining when made, as shown, in three. Other suitable compositions may be used for either lining.
We claim the combination, in an} flask for casting-the above-namedarticles, of the outer case A, the flanges a a, the coarse inner lining l3, composed of certain suitable materials, as set for h, and afiner-grained lining, C, composedof another conibinution of materials, to be mixed and applied substantially as described.
