Description
rttmi y wat alie-ttt,A @Mine o. W. BEAN, vor FA'RMINGToyN, TEXAS.
Letters Patent No. 92,776, dated July 20,1869.
IMIPROV'ED MACHINE FOR BREAKING- AND SCO'U'RING- HIDES.
The Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and making part of the sameA ing is a'fnll, clear, andexact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This Ainvention relates toimprovements in machinery for treating hides in tanning; and consists of anarrangement of apparatus to be placed over a vat coutaining the water, 'and adapted to break and scour the lides in the presence ot' the water.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional elevation ot my improved machine, and Y Figure 2 represents a plan view of the salue.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a framing, preferably of rectangular form, for supporting the operating-parts, and adapted to be placed over a suitable vat or pool.
' B represents an endless feeding-apron, worked upon A a pair of rollers, C, to be driven by any competent power. They are designed for feeding the hides after being placed thereon by the operator, to the breakingroller E, provided with breaking 0r scraping-knives Ff Above the feed-roller, next the breaking-roller, 4is provided a guide or presser-roller, G, geared with the leed-roller under it, and supported iu yielding bearings.
' Below the breaking-roller is an apron, H, pivoted to the frame at I, and suspended by the hangers K, capable of adjustment, to support the free end at any desired distance from the breaker.
The hides to be operated on, lying in the water of the vat, are taken up by the operator and spread upon -the endless apron B, by which they are passed under the roller G, to the breaker, which has a more rapid motion than the apron and the rollers. As soon as the hide begins t pass through the-rollers G C, the beaters will act upon it in a manner to scrape and beat the same, this action continuing until it is delivered over the end ofthe apron H, i1l1tQ. the .water again, by which it is kept wet and soft.
The machine is designed to be so made that a brushing-roller may be substituted for the beating-rollers, for snbjectin g the hides to abrushing-action `when desired, and which is also required in the tanning-process.
`Having thusdescribed my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to. Secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the endless belt B, rollers C and G, beater-roller E, and apron H, all substantially as specified.
O. W. BEAN.
