IMPROVEMENT IN MACHNERY POR STRIKING- OUT LEATHER.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part .0f the Bamb- Ta all whom it 'may conce/rn Be it known that I, SAMUEL Hu'rciinrsos, of Leeds, iu the county of York and Kingdom of England, have invented new and improved Machinery or Apparatus for Striking Out Leather and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanyingdrawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to means of effecting what is technically known as striking out or stretching and stiiightening skins in the process of leather-dressing; an

' 'I he improvements consist in the combination of a plain, even-snifaced roller, having a recess therein and a slip-rod and fastener to hold a skin when placed on the said roller, with a spirally-lnted roller, the spirals of which run in opposite directions from-the middle thereof. These rollers are caused to rotate at differ'- ent surface-speeds, the plain one to carry the skin and the uted one to operate upon it to strike out, stretch,

or'expand and straighten the same, for which purpose it is run ata greater surface-speed than the plain one. The said rollers are mounted in suitable frame-work, and. may be driven by gearing, pulleys, and straps, or equivalent means, from any convenient source of motive-power, or by manual power.

This-invention will be readily understood by'reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, whereigur'e 1 is thefront elevation, and

A is the plain-surfaced roller, having a recess in which is a slip-rod, a, held by a screw-bolt, a'. This roller is mounted in stationary bearings of the frame-V ends B, which are held together `by the tie-rods B', secured by screw-nuts.

C is the spirally-ntcd roller, mounted in bearings capable of being moved up or down in the said endframes, so that its surface may be adjusted or set nearer to or further from the surface of the plain roller, as required, which adjustment is effected by means of the cross-shaft D and the winch-handle D1, bevel-wheels D2 and D? connecting the same with the screw-pins D* and D5 attached to the bearings of theV said roller. l

On one end of this iluted' roller are the driving-pulleys E and Ef, and on the other cnd is a worm, F, in gear with a wheel, F', loose on an upright shaft, G, on which is fixed a worm, G', in gear with a wheel, H xed on the end ofthe shaft of the roller A.`

On the top of the shaft G is a slidable clutch, I, movable on a feather iu the said shaft by the handle J, which is hinged on'a pillar, K, so as to place it in or out of gear with another clutch on the wheel F', whereby, when in gear, a slow mot-ion is communicated from the roller O to the roller A.

The method of using this machine' is as follows:

A bolster of India rubber and another of leather are first fixed; each by one edge, in the recess of the roller A, and are loose at the other edges, so that, as the said roller is turned, they becomeavound tight thereon. The India. rubber, being elastic, will yield to the ine` qualities in the substance of the skin when placed thereon to be operated by the tluted roller.

It will now readily be seen that, if the skin be place with its rig, or about its middle from neck tobutt, or

.acrosswise thereof from belly to belly, under the sliprod in the recess, and the rod secured by the screwbolt so as to hold the said skin thereon, and, motion being given to the rollers in the proper direction, the skin will pass iu betwixt them, when the spiral flutings of the roller O, divergingfrom the middle, will strike out or. stretch the said skin on one side of the rod during it-spassage, -and thereby straighten or make it even, ready for the process of shaving or other purpose. It is then changed, and the other side of the skin is operated upon in like manner.

What I claim as my invention is- The combination of a plain roller, having provision for fastening a skin thereto, with a vertically-adj ustable spirally-iluted roller, arranged and used in manner and for purposes substantially as shown and described.
