CHARLES P. GATLIN, OF DULUTH, MINNESDTA.
KNIFE-DISPLAY RACK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CnARLEs P. CATLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Display Racks, of which the following is a specificalion. L
This invention relates to improvements i portable racks for displaying knives in store windows and on the counters and like places.
Knives have been displayed by securing them against a wall, board, or other fixed and solid surface.
The object of this invention is to provide a skeleton rack which will not obscure the light, which will be ornamental in appearance, and capable of being moved from one place to another to vary the display.
I accomplish the objects of t e invention by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of -my improved raek filled with knives, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the two views.
3 is the base of my rack, and will preferably rest upon knobs 4 of rubber or other soft material which will prevent injury to finished surfaces upon which the rack may he placed.
5 are vertical standards at each end of the base 3, and extending upwardly in oblique directions toward each other from the ends 5 are the top members 6. These top members are provided with elongated slots 7 which'extend longitudinally of the top members 6. The knives 8, of various sizes and styles, have their blades passed through the respective slots 7 and the ends of the blades are made to enter notches 9 in the base 3. The knives will preferably be of assorted lengths, and the longest knives will be placed at the highest oint's of the oblique members 6 above the base 3. The notches 9 will be long and narrow and will be placed with longest dimensions extending longitudinally of the base 3. By making the notches long in this manner the edgewise position of the knife Specification of Letters Patent.

may be varied within the range of the length of the slot to permit the knife to stand vertically or to be inclined edgewise in either direction for the purpose ofchanging the appearance of the display. The adjacent slots at the mid-length of base 3 will be closer together than are the remaining slots to permit the angular position of the middle knives to be varied.
The base 3 will be sufficiently wise to permit a row of .notches 10 to be formed in the base on each side of the row of notches 9.
These notches 10 will hold the positions of the knives when the latter are tilted sidewise toward either edge of the base 3 and they thereby afford additional means for varying the display. To facilitate the tilting of the knives sidewise, as last described, the slots 7 will be widened at top and bottom as shown in Fi 2, to permit this tilting without any interference or binding of the knife-blade in slot 7.
I have here shown a rack with a straight bottom, vertical standards rising from the ends of the latter, said standards supporting a pair of upwardly oblique straight boards but I do not wish to limit my invention to the exact shape shown, as it is obvious that other shapes may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a knife display rack, a base having notches in a plurality of longitudinal rows to receive knife points, standards at each end of said base, and an upwardly arched member connecting the upper ends of said standards, said u wardly arched member havlng a longitudina row of slots for the passage of knife blades therethrough, the sides of said slots being contracted toward their middles.
In witness whereof,I, have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 9th day of February, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and nine.
