I COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH cm. WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNTTED STATES PATEN T @FFTQE.
FRANK FAUTH, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
FILE-SHELF.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK FAUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Shelves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in filing shelves to be used for the purpose of filing letters, pamphlets, books, etc.
An object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character consisting of a shelf constructed from a single sheet of metal or the like in such manner as to provide a means whereby supports can be secured thereto and also to provide a means whereby a series of transverse partitions can be adj ustably supported in vertical position upon the upper side or face thereof.
Another obj ectis to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use and readily operated.
With the above and numerous other objects in view this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one end thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof. Fig. 4. is a transverse view taken on the line 4lat of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4:, taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the adjustable partitions.
Referring to the drawings throughout the several views by similar characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved filing shelf which comprises a base 2 of sheet metal or the like, bent longitudinally throughout its length to form a horizontal surface 3, the opposite sides of which are bent downwardly at right angles thereto as at 4 and then outwardly as at 5 to form the bot-toms for a pair of parallel channels 6. The material is next bent downwardly for a suitable distance as at 7 and then back upon itself as at 8 until it reaches the same horizontal plane as the surface 3, thus completing the outer sides of the channels 6. The upper edges of the outer Specification of Letters Patent.

sides of the channels 6 are at 9 and reinforced as at 10 for a purpose to be later disclosed, while the opposite ends of the base 2 have formed thereon tongues 11 which may be bent upwardly for the purpose of closing the ends of the said channels 6. The lowest extremities of the sides 8 of the channel are curved to form sleeves 12 for the reception of the inwardly projecting offset ends 13 of substantially U-shaped sup ports or legs 14.
Transversely extending inverted U shaped partitions 15 are provided upon the lower ends of their legs with outwardly offset feet 16 which are bent forwardly as at 17 and adapted to engage the channels 6 and be longitudinally adjustable therein. The peculiar construction of the feet serves to prevent the partitions 15 from tilting toward either end of the shelf.
The arches of the partitions 15 may be provided with cards of identification which are clearly illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings by the numeral 18.
Parallel guides 19 are formed upon one side of the base 2 for the reception of cards 20 which may be positioned between the partitions 15 as desired.
From the previous description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be manifest that a filing shelf is provided for which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
The foregoing disclosures illustrate one embodiment of my invention, but it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described this invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
The combination, in a device such as described of a base formed from a single piece of sheet metal bent downwardly at its opposite edges and then at right angles in parallel relation to the base, the said material being bent downwardly and then back upon itself to form sides for the channels the upper edges of the sides being bent inwardly in the same plane as the base to partially close the channels, U shaped partitions extending through the channels, the ends of the portions being offset to engage the bottoms of the channels and extend transversely thereacross, the terminals of bent inwardly as the offsets being bent to engage the outer In testimony whereof I affix my signature sides of the channels, sleeves forinedet the in presence of tWo Witnesses.
lower ends of the sides of the channels, and FRANK FAUTH.
egs engaging the sleeves for the purpose of supporting the base, and tongues formed Witnesses:

the channels. GEORGE W. OFFUTT, Jr.
