SUPPORTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Application filed October 27, 1908. Serial No. 459,802.
To all whom it may concer/n.:
Be it known that I, IIENRIETTA BaenasON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hayward, in the county of Freeborn and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usc the same. y
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in supporting devices and more particularly to that class adapted to be used for holding mirrors and my object is to provide means for raising and lowering a mirror on a standard.
A further object is to provide an adjustable means for receiving the mirror and a still further object is to provide means for temporarily anchoring the upper end of the standard to a solid object.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved mirror support, showing the mirror in position thereon in dotted lines. Eig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof. Eig. 3 is a detail sectional view as seen on line 3-3, Fig. 1, and, Fig. 4 is a sectional view as seen online 4 4, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a standard, which is preferably constructed of metal, to the lower end of which is secured a spider 2 and 4by which means the standard is normally held in a vertical position.
Slidably mounted on the standard 1 is an arm 3, that portion of the arm surrounding the standard being' formed into a split socket 4, each section of the socket having an ear 5 through which extends a clamping bolt 6 and when said clamping holt has been rotated to draw the ears together', the socket will he securely clamped on the rod and the arm held in its adjusted position. The eX- tended end of the arm 3 is bifurcated and the extreme outer ends are provided with laterally extending bearings 7, through which is introduced a tubular shaft 8. The meeting ends of the bearings 7 are spaced apart to form a recess 9, in which is located the head 1() of a depending tubular shaft 11 and for matter' of convenience, the tubular shaft 8 is formed in two sections and their meeting ends threaded into a bore through the head. 10. The bearings 7 are adapted to lit closely on each side of the head 10 so that by extending the binding screw through the bifurcated portions of the arm 3, the ends of the bearings may be securely clamped against the head 10 and the depending shaft 11 thus held against swinging movement.
Projecting into the ends of the tuloular shaft 8 and depending shaft 11, are rods 13 and 14, respectively, the outer ends of said rods having clips 15 thereon which clips are adapted to engage the frame of the mirror 16. The rods 13 and 1.4 are slidably mounted in their respective shafts so that they may loe adjusted longitudinally to bring the clips into engagement with frames of different sizes and after the clips have heen brought into engagement with the edges of the mirn rer frame, they are secured in their respective positions by introducing split collars 17 around the ends of the shafts 8 and 1l and providing the collars with binding screws 18 and to insure that the collars will positively clamp the ends of the shafts in engagement with the rods, said shafts may be provided with slits 19 extending inwardly from the free ends of said shaft.
In some instances, it is desirable to securely brace the standard 1 and hold the same in a 'fixed vertical position and to this end I have provided an anchoring device comprising a shaft 20, one end of which is rotatably mounted in a socket 2l., while the opposite end thereof is introduced through a bearing 22 of a clamping head 23, that portion of the shaft immediately adjacent the hearing 22, having collars 24 thereon to prevent the shaft from leaving the hearing. The shaft 2O is hollow and interiorly threaded to receive the threaded shank 25 of a clamping jaw 26, the heel portion of the jaw 26 being seated in a recess 27 formed in the shank of the clam ing head 23, whereby the jaw 26 will be he d against moving out of alinement with the jaw portion of the clamping head, but said jaw will loe free to move to and from the outer end of the clamping head when the clamping head is held in a fixed position and the shaft 2O rotated. The inner end of the shaft 2O is provided with a circumferential shoulder 28, which shoulder enters a channel 29 in the outer end of the socket 21, said shoulder holding the shaft against leaving the socket, but permitting the shaft to freely rotate. The socket 25 is adjustably secured on the standard 1 so that the bracing arrangement may be moved to the extreme upper end of the standard or lowered to any point thereon as occasion may require.
The prime object of my invention is to provide means for readily disposing tl e mirror to the proper height for observation of the upper portion of the body or lowering the same to get a view of the bottoms of skirts and it will be readily seen that by looseningl the bolts 6, the mirror may be readily low ered to the base of the standard or moved to a oint adjacent the upper end thereof. It wil likewise be seen that by adjustably mounting the rods 13 and 141 in their respective shafts, mirrors of various sizes may be employed and securely held in position on the standard.
'Vhen it is desired to anchor the upper end of the standard to a stationary object such as moldings or the lille, the clamping head and jaw carried thereby are placed on opposite sides of parts of the molding and the shaft 20 then rotated to force the jaw into engagement with the interposed portion of the molding, the turning of the shaft 20 being facilitated through the medium of a hand wheel 30 surrounding the central portion of the shaft.
ln placing the mirror in position, the collars 17 are first loosened to permit free longitudinal movement of the rods 13 and 14 and after the rod 14 has been extended to the proper point, the collar employed for securing the same within the shaft 11, is securely clamped around the shaft and the mirror then placed in position on the clip at the lower end of the rod 14. The rods 13 are then moved inwardly until the clips at their outer ends have engaged the frame of the mirror, when the collars on the shaft 8 are clamped in position on the shaft and the rods 18 held against longitudinal movement. 1f it is found that the mirror is not resting at the proper angle, the binding screw 12 is to be loosened and the depending shaft 11 swung forwardly or rearwardly to dispose the mirror at a proper' angle when the binding screw 12 is again tightened and the mirror held in its adjusted position.
1What I claim is:
1. 1n a mirror support, the combination with a standard and means to normally hold the same in a vertical position; of an arm adjustably mounted on the standard, means to clamp the arm in its adjusted position, said arm being bifurcated and provided with laterally extending bearings at the outer end of the arm, a tubular shaft extending through said bearings, a depending shaft having a head at its upper end extending between said bearings and surrounding said tubular shaft and means adjustably secured to said shafts adapted to engage and support a mirror.
2. ln a mirror support, the combination with a standard and means to hold the same in a vertical position, of an arm having one of its ends bifurcated and provided with laterally extending bearings and its opposite end provided with a split socket, means to clamp the socket around the standard, whereby the arm will be held in an adjusted position, a tubular shaft extending through the bearings on the arm, a depending tubular shaft having one of its ends introduced between said bearings and around the shaft in said bearings, means to clamp the bearings against the interposed portions of the depending shaft, rods adjustably mounted in said shafts, said rods having means at their outer ends to engage and support a mirror and means to secure said rods in their adjusted positions.
3. ln a mirror support, the combination with a standard, and an adjustable means thereon for supporting the mirror; of a socket engaging said standard above a mirror support, a tubular shaft rotatably mounted in said socket, a clamping head rotatably mounted on the outer end of said shaft and a jaw adapted to be moved into engagement with an object and said object clamped between the head and aw.
