Description
G. W. SCOTT. SIDE CURTAIN FOR VEHICLES.
APPLICATION FILED Nov. I4, 1913.
' Patented Oct. 31, 1916.
awn/nag 8 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. SCOTT, 0F TROY, OHIO.
SIDE CURTAIN FOR VEHICLES.
Application filed November 14, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Curtains for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in side curtains for vehicles, it beingespecially adapted for motor vehicles.
The object of my invention is to provide a roller curtain which may be quickly and easily attached to the wind shield of a motor vehicle and may also be readily and easily removed when desired; the particular object being to provide adjustable means which will enable the curtain to be conveniently applied to wind shields of difierent makes and styles.
In the said drawings,-'Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a motor vehicle and its wind shield showing my curtain applied thereto, the curtain being attached to the frame of the wind shield. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the curtain attached to the brace rod of the wind shield. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line H of Fig. 2.
Like parts are represented by similar characters of reference throughout the several views. p
In the said drawings, 1 represents a portionof the body of a motor vehicle, 2 is the wind shield and 3 the top.
4: represents an ordinary roller curtain supported in the usual way in a frame consisting of a rod 5 having laterally extending ends 5" in which the curtain is supported. In order that this curtain may be secured to any of the different types of wind shields now in common use, I have devised a clamp of peculiarconstruction which will enable the curtain to be properly adjusted in position.
6 and 7 represent the respective parts of a clamp arranged to be drawn together by an eye-bolt 8. Extending through the eye 9 of this bolt and arranged to be clamped firmly in the recessed side of the member 7 is a short rod 10; the diameter of the eye 9 being somewhat greater than that of the rod 10 so as to allow the rod to be freely adjusted therein as well as to be clamped Specification of Letters Patent.
to permit of this.
Patented Oct. 31, 1916.
Serial No. 801,000.
against the member 7 One end of the rod 10 is reduced and screw-threaded as indicated at 11, and it is also provided with a tapered squared portion 12. Located loosely on this screw-threaded portion is a clip 13 shaped to receive the curtain bracket or sup port 5. A wing-nut 14: serves the purpose of springing the portions of the clip together to cause the same to firmly clamp the support 5, and one arm of the clip is pro vided with a recess conformed to the shape of the tapered squared portion 12 so that when the parts are clamped together, they will be prevented from turning with respect to each other.
It willbenoticed that the main clamp 6 and 7 is provided with two openings of different sizes. One of these is for the purpose of clamping the frame of a wind shield, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, while the other is intended to be clamped to the brace rod 15 of the shield as indicated in Figs. 2 and I; it being understood that the clamp members will be reversed or turned end for end Before the parts are clamped together, the rod 10 may be adjusted not only lengthwise through the eye 9, but also turned therein to any position necessary to bring the curtain parallel with the edge of the shield, whether it is clamped to the frame of the shield itself or to the brace rod, which may set at any angle. The clamp 13 permits the frame 5 to be moved up or down to any desired position to bring the curtain to the proper points with respect to the body and top.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a vehicle curtain of the character described, a curtain support, a removable clamp adapted to be attached to a wind shield or its brace, a laterally-extending rod secured to said clamp, said rod and clamp GEORGE W. SCOTT.
