Specication of Letztem Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Appleman fired June 1i, 1908. semi No. 41.37.895.
To' all'ivhom it may concern:
Be 1t lgnown that I, WILLIAM A. CAMP BELL, crtlzen of the United States, residing at Marceline, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Plows and Scrapers, of Which t e following is a specification.
The present invention provides a novel machine particularly adapted for road-work, either in opening new roads 9i' for leveling and repairing existing roads, the machine embodving a plow and a draO', both ol which are independently adjustable according'to the particular work in hand, and the drag having independent lateral movement either l' to distribute the earth to 'lill up low places or to cut oil' projections and to throw the surplus earth outward.
For a viull understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details oi' construction and the nreans for effecting the result, refer ence is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
While the invention may be adapted to dil'- `ferent forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the acconnmnying drawings, in which: ,r i
Figure l is a perspective view of a machine embodying the invention. Fig. .2 is a top plan view. Fig. 15 is a longitudinal scction, the front portion ol" the plow beam being broken away, said view representing the parts as seen looking towards the beam.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view oi the rear end of the beam showing the mountings and cooperating parts oi' thr` caster wheel fitted thereto. Fig. 5 is a perspective View ci' thc rea-r end ol' the drag bar, showing the mountings and cooperating parts of `the caster wheel applied thereto. Fig. 6 is a detail )erspectrve view of the front portions of the beam and drag bar, showing their' connections. Corresponding and lihc parts are referred to in the-followin f description and indicated in all the views o' the drawings by the same reference characters.
The machine embodies a beam 1, a plow 2,
or portion of the bnr lo.
beam.
the plow and drag to meet conditions of work. The beam 4 preferably consists of a wooden timber and is secured at its iront end to a czrsting 7 which is recessed in a side to receive said beam, portions of the casting embracing up' er and lower edges of the A brac 'et S is secured to a sideol the casting .7 near the iront end or" the beam i and Yits horizontal :members or arms are pierced so as to receive a pin 9 upon which the drag 3 is mounted to swing horizontally. Guides 10 are arranged upon the outer' side ofthe casting 7a and receive a plate l] which is provided at its lower end with the front wheel 5, said. plate being adjusted. vertically b v means of a lever 12 which is pivotcd at 13 to the beam l, a l`oot rest 1li having connection with the rear end ot said lever to be depressed when it is required to elevate the plow 2. "lhc foot rest 14 extends within convenient reach of the feet of the driver.
1 vent side draft and insure movement of the machine in a direct line, a blade l5 is mounted in guides 16 secured to the inner side of the beam 4- near the rear end thereof. A lever'l? is provided to move the blade i5 vertically, and said lever' is supplied withl the usual latch bolt to coi'iperate with anotchcd segment to secure the blade l5 in the adjusted iosition.
rlhe rame oi theI castor wheel 7 is pivoted to the lower end ol' a bar 1S mount-od in suitable guides l'or vertical adjustment, said caster wheel being free to move about a vertical axis. A lever' i9 pivotcd at 2() is provided with a toothed segment l which `is adapted to mesh with teeth 2;- aloizg ar. odge 'lht` lover in is snppliod with the :tr-customer] ia-trh boh which r'oripcratcs with a toothed segment '2N bi means olE which the bar 1S and the caster wheel 7 is securor'l in the adjusted position.
'lhr` drag .3 consists of a metal bar or-platc which may be cast or otherwise constructed, and as stated is pivoted at its front ends to the iront portion of the beam 4, so as to swing laterallyv at its rear end. 'A rib 2l is formed on the inner' side of the drag and cxtends lengthwise thereof and is 'formed with a series of openings 25. A' rod 26 secured ai one` end to the beam 4, has its opposite end or hook form and adapted to engage any one oi" a series oi' openings 25 so as to secure the drag in the required position. A blade. 27 is bolted or otherwise favored to the lower odge lOt l i) i.
10 with a toothed segment of the bai" 3, and is of case hard `'fied or teinpeied steel so as to resist wear.
The caster wheel 6 is mounted in a ifiaine 28 which is pivoted to a vertically ad'iistable i 5 plate 29 so as to swing laterally. Trie plate ldever 3e is provided witii latcli bolt which 25 Side draft is prevented by tbc blade l5 which 80 tiie daag' may be cooperates with the toothed segment 36 forming a part of the guide 3,1 so as to secure tbe plateQQ and caster Wheel il iii tbe desired position.
Fiom the foregoing' it will understood that tlie plow 2 may be instantly raised. oi" lowered and is controlled in its movement by weight of tlie driver tlii'oiigli the instrumentality of the foot rest and lei/er l2.
may be projected to a greater oi' less extent the road oi' surface iipoii wlilcli the inacliiiie may be operated. The lateral inclination of regulated and lined by means 'of the rod and tlie openings 2.3 formed iii 'be web llie rear end ci' tlie drag may be adjusted b moving tlie plate 2Q up or down, as will eadily apparent.
Having thus described the inveiitioii, what iaiiiied as new is: 1
iii combination, a i@low beam provided with a plow point, a second beam extended iearwaidi from the plow beam, a drag liant'M ifi ing ivotal connection at its front end With tlie Iront portion of said Second beaiii and lateially adjustable at its ieai end, means for connecting` tlie drag to said second beam and fixing its position, a Wheel arranged near the i'ioiit end of said second beam, casteiwheels at the rear ends oi said second beam and drag, and means i'foi verticalli7 adjusting the several wheels and securing'ytlie same in the located position.. l
ln combination, a plot' beam provided with a plow point, a second beam extended rearward from the plow beam, a laterally adjustable drag having. pivotal coniiectioiiaty Apivotal connection at its front end with said second beam, very second beam and having' a longitudinal. rib' below the beam 4 according to tlie nature oi .L 4, iipoii its inner side loiined Wgtlia series o openings, a rod adjustably Connecting the drag with said seeoiid beam, a veitically adf n ,instable wheel Iieai the front end` et said second beam, and vertically adjiietablecaster rmeele at tho rear second beam. i. f
ln testimony whereof I ailgi my signature presence of two Witnesses.;y
