Description

- ing and leveling the dirt.
about ten feet.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. ORITTENDEN, OF BELDEN, OHIO.
ROAD-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,884, dated November 29, 1887.
Application filed April 21, 1887. Serial No. 235,713. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. CRITTEN- DEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belden, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful-Road Scraping Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of roadscrapers which will clean out the ditch beside the road and throw the dirt in toward the center of the road and at the same time level it. This result is attained by the use of a landside which runs in a direction nearly parallel with the line of draft, to which is secured on the right side a wing which may be adjusted'to any desirable angle for the purpose ofspread- At the front end of said landside is secured a plow, which is hinged thereto, so that it can be directed to the right or left, as may be desired, and also so that the point of the plow may be elevated or depressed by the operator at will. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan View. Fig. 3 is a detached and enlarged side elevation of the plow. Fig. 4 is a detached plan view of the plow with the operating-handle removed. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the plow with the mold-board broken away, so as to show the elevating-wheel and the apparatus whereby it is operated.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out the several views. I
The landside A is constructed of plank, and is in width about fourteen inches and in length To this is hinged a wing, B, which is adjustable,so as to graduate the width of the scraper by the ordinary means. This wing is armed at its lower edge with a steel flange, a, which serves to cut and level the surface.
0 represents the plow, which is constructed in the ordinary form so far as the point and mold-board are concerned; but on the land side there is secured a steel plate, b, which is so formed as to make a colter, which projects forward, as seen at c. Said plate also extends downward a short distance, as seen at d, for the purpose of cutting into the solid earth, and thus prevent all side draft.
On the inside of the landside, and secured to it in suitable ways, is a wheel, E, which is easily lowered or elevated, at the will of the operator, by means of lever gand bent lever h and connecting-rods t". Said roller or wheel E is also provided with a flange, k, which, while the wheel is in operation, cuts into the earth and prevents all side draft. The object of this wheel is to raise the plow, when desired, out of the ground, so that it may be hauled from one point to another without taking hold.
D representsalever which is secured rigidly to the plow, and extends to the rear of the machine, and serves as aguiding-lever to give direction to the plow. By pressing to the right or left, also by raising or lowering this lever, the point of the plow can be raised or lowered. The upper hinge, m, or that portion ofit which is secured to the plow, is slotted, so as to give considerable play on the bolt '11., while the lower hinge, not being slotted, forms a fulcrum on which the plow rocks when the lever is elevated or depressed at the rear end.
At the rear end of the landside a wheel, E, is pivoted, which is provided with radial cutters, which take hold of the earth and prevent side draft. A plate, F, is also secured to the rear end of the landside for'the same purpose.
I claim l. A road-scraper having a landside, A, which runs nearly parallel to the line of draft, having at its rear end a lining-wheel for the purpose of resisting side draft, and also at its forward end having an oscillating plow hinged. to the landside by a vertical bolt, and ears the upper of which is slotted, so as to be operated freely by means of a lever in any desired direction, the same being. constructed and operating substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the landside .of the plow, as described, of a steel plate which extends forward, so as to form a cutting-edge or colter, c, in front, and extends below the landside, so as to bed into the earth while in use, and thus prevent all side draft, as described.
WVM. H. GRITTENDEN.
