Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. Bosr WIOK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have'invented a new and Improved Cover-Fastening for Jars, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is'to provide an improved cover fastening for fruit jars and like articles comprising a spring actuated clamping mechanism for securing the cover to the jar.
The essential features of my present invention are a spring yoke having downwardly extending portions adapted to engage a yoke holding'means on the jar and a spring seat adapted to engage over the cover of the jar and having slots in its ends to slidably engage over the downwardly extending portions of the yoke and'insertible over such downwardly extending portions of the yoke when in oblique position relative to the yoke, in combination with a spring member pivotally connected to the spring seat near its center and having its ends ex tending obliquely upward towards the yoke and adapted to reactively engage the yoke near the downwardly extending portions thereof. r
The accompanying drawings illustrating my invention are as follows Figure l is a top view of the jar and Fig. 2 is a side view ofa portion of the jar with my cover fastening in 3 and 4 are side and edge views, respectively, of the fastening removed and with the parts in their normal positions. Figs. 5 and 6 are views similar to 3 and 4, respectively, except that the parts are moved and locked in the positions to permit the free insertion of the fastening over the jar with the cover thereon. Figs. 7 and 8 show in side and edge views, respectively, a modified means for holding the spring seat in its uppermost position.

D is provided of a curvature adapted to engage the cover C near its outer edge and in this spring seat D are seen slots cl adapted to slidably I receive the downwardly extending portions e on the yoke E, and these slots are so located and proportioned that the spring seat D may be inserted over the downwardly extending portions 6 after all of the parts have been formed up by moving the spring seat D to an oblique position after first inthereof over one of the members 6.
A spring P is pivotally supported on the spring seat at or near its center and the upwardly extending ends of this spring P are adapted to engage the yoke E near the downwardly extending members 6 thereon. On the yoke are formed downwardly extending ears h, between which the ends of thespring P engage and by means of which such spring P is normally prevented from turning relatively to the yoke E, the ends of such spring P being slidable between the ears h on the yoke E. The connection between the spring P and the spring seat D is such as to permit a relative rotation between these parts, and for this purpose a rivet as r The downwardly extending portions 6 of the yoke E are provided near their upper ends with notches 0 adapted to receive the spring seat D when raised to the position indicated in Figs. 5 and 6 and rotated upon its center slightly to cause the portion of the spring on one side of each of the slotsd to engage into the notches 0, and when the parts are in the positions indicated in Figs. 5 and 6, the fastening is readily insertible over the jar B with the cover C in place thereon, and, after having been thus inserted overthe jar, by turning the spring seat D relatively to the yoke E back to its normal position relatively thereto the parts immediately assume the positions indicated in Fig. 2, firmly holding the cover of the jar down in place. The parts may be forced from the positions indicated in Figs. 3 and 4 to the positions indicated in Figs. 5 and 6 by pressing the fastening between the thumb and finger of each hand and when forced to such positions they may beheld there either by the hands of the operatorwhile being inserted over the can or they may be held there indefinitely by a slight turning ofv the spring seat D relative to the yoke E as already described.
To facilitate thespringing of the parts to the positions indicated in Figs. 5 and (S, the spring seat D has its ends extended somewhat beyond the yoke E.
Referring now to Figs. 7 and 8,-in place of the notches 0 in the members 0, I may make use of spring tongues such as 0 pressed from the plane of the member 6 the normal positions for which springs is as seen in Fig. 7, and when the spring seat D is raised to its uppe most position, it is held there by a spring 0 engaging under the outer end thereof. The springs such as 0 of which there will of course be one on each member 6 of the yoke E,may be readily pushed in by the finger of the operator engaging under the ends of the spring seat D.
In using my cover fastening, the jar is filled and the cover inserted in place with the band '0 underneath it in the usual way and then my fastening is inserted over the jar with the cover in place, either while the parts are being held, as described, in the positions indicated in Figs. 5 and 6 by the hand of the operator, or by the spring seat D engaging the notches 0 therefor in the portions 6 of the yoke E, in either case after the insert-ion of the fastening in place, the ends of the spring seat D are released and the parts automatically assume the positions indicated in Fig. 2.
The yoke .15 is preferably of spring metal in order that it may be sprung, as is quite necessary in inserting the spring seat D and again this feature adds to the yielding character of the pressure exerted by the parts upon the cover of the can when in operative position thereon.
lVhat I claim is 1. A cover fastening for a fruit jar having a yoke engaging means thereon, comprising a yoke having downwardly extending portions provided at their lower ends with members adapted to engage such yoke holding means; a spring seat adapted to extend across the top of the cover of the jar and having slots or openings near its ends to slidably receive the downwardly extending portions of such yoke and insertible thereover when in oblique position relative to such yoke and pivotally supported on such spring seat a spring member having its ends extending obliquely upward and adapted to engage the yoke near the downwardly extending portions thereof.

A cover fastening for a fruit jar having a yoke engaging means thereon, comprising a yoke having downwardly extending portions provided at their lower ends with members adapted to engage such yoke holding means; a spring seat adapted to extend across the top of the cover of the jar and having slots or openings near its ends to slidably receive the downwardly extending portions of such yoke and insertible thereover when in oblique position relative to such yoke; pivotally supported on such spring seat a spring member having its ends extending obliquely upward and adapted to engage the yoke near the downwardly extending portions thereof and means for preventing a rotation of such pivotally supported spring relative to the body of the yoke when in engagement therewith.

5. A cover fastening for a fruit jar having a yoke engaging means thereon, comprising a yoke having downwardly extending portions provided at their lower ends with members adapted to engage such yoke holding means; a spring seat adapted to extend across the top of the cover of the jar and having slots or openings near its ends to slidably receive the dmvnwardly extending portions of such yoke and insertible thereover and supported on such spring seat a spring member adapted to reactively engage the spring seat at its center and the yoke near the downwardly extending portions thereof.

A cover fastening for a fruit jar having a yoke engaging means thereon, comprising a yoke having downwardly extending portions provided at their lower ends with menu-1 hers adapted to engage such yoke holding means; a seat adapted to extend across the top of the cover of the jar and having slots or openings near its ends to slidably receive the downwardly extending portions of such yoke and insertible thereover and supported on such seat a spring member adapted to reactively engage the seat at its center and the yoke near'the downwardly extending portions thereof.
7. A cover fastening for a fruit jar having a yoke engaging means thereon comprising a yoke having downwardly extending a r the top portions provided at their lower ends with members adapted to engage such yoke holdmg means; a seat adapted to extend across of the cover of the jar and having slots or openings near its ends to slidably receive the downwardly extending portions of such yoke and insertible thereover and a spring member adapted to re-actively engage such seat and such yoke to yieldably force them apart.
