UNITED STATES PATENT @IEFICE.
JOHANNES CHRISTIAN .IOHANSEN, OF COPENHAGEN, DENMARK.
VIBRATORY APPARATUS FOR TI-IERAPEUTIC USE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHANNES CHRISTIAN J OHANSEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, and aresident of the city of Copenhagen, Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vibratory A paratus for Therapeutic Use, of which the ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to cord vibratory apparatus for therapeutic use, and has for its 0 ject to provide an apparatus of simple construction which can be operated by the patient himself.
According to this invention, the apparatus comprises a shaft mounted in a casing in which it is caused to rotate, first in one direction and then in the other, by means of a cord which is guided in a hollow projection of conical cross-section, and alternately wound and unwound upon the shaft, one end of which carries a weight which rotates with it.
The accompanying drawing shows, in vertical section, an a paratus, constructed in accordance with th1s invention.
In the casing, 1, is disposed a rotatable longitudinal shaft, 2, one end of which rojects through the casing to form a ree or drum, 3. The lower end of the shaft is provided with a rotatable weight, 4, which may, in any suitable manner, be mounted on the shaft so that the weight will rotate in one direction only. To the weight 4 is connected one end of a spiral spring 5, the other end of which is fastened to the casing 1 by a pin 6, or in some other manner. Upon the reel, 3, of the shaft 2 is wound a cord, 7, and over the reel is fitted a cylindrical extension or cover 8 which serves as a handle by which the apparatus may be grasped. The cover 8 can be fastened to and disconnected from the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 14, 1908.
Patented Jan. 26, 1909.
Serial No. 27,089.
casing 1. The handle, 8, carries a hollow conical projection 9, provided with an aperture at its outer end which has a rounded edge, 10. The end of the cord 7 passes through the aperture 10, and is fastened to a suitable operating handle 11.
As the spring is connected at one end with the weight, 4, and at the other end with the pin 6, if the cord be pulled from the position shown in the drawing, the spring 5 will be unwound (against its spring action) and the shaft and wei ht will be turned, and upon release of the cord, the spring will return the shaft and weight, in the opposite direction.
By employing a hollow conical guide, such as 9, for the operating cord and providing a member, such as 8, to form a handle, the device is exceedingly unlikely to get out of order, but readily enables a new cord to be fitted if desired. Moreover, owing to the cord being more satisfactorily guided, the shaft is rotated in an exceeding regular manner and the spring is consequently less liable to be subjected to any sudden strain, and so broken or damaged.
What I claim is:
A vibratory apparatus, comprising a casing, a rotatable shaft therein, a weight rotatable by said shaft, a hollow handle for the apparatus, a conical extension from said handle, and a cord wound upon the shaft and extending outwardly through the conical extension.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
JOHANNES CHRISTIAN JOHANSEN.
