IMPROVED SLIDE FOR EXTENSION-TABLES.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

Be it known that I, JAMES W. TEFFT, of the city of Buffalo, in the county ofErie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slides for Extension-Tables and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,*and exact reference being had to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification.'

My invention relates to providing an extensiontable with a-pair or more wooden or metal bars, each provided with two grooves, meeting upon the lateral surface ofthe bar, the one inclined downward and inward at an angle of `forty-five degrees, more or less, the other upward and inward at the same angle.

face ofthe bar, and from the central line thereof', and

have such lineas a common point of divergence, the grooves in each bar being in ythe same relative position, and only the surfaces touching are grooved.

In the case of two bars being used,'the groove of one is provided at one end with a double diagonal crossl ot'metal or othe'll suitable' material iirmly set in the groove, and of `such size that the arms ofthe cross will fit and slide smoothly in the grooves of the adjacent bar, and so arranged that one-half of the cross laterally projects above the lateral surface ofthe bar.

At a proper distance from said cross, and' embedded' i in said groove, is a stop, similar in form to a section of said cross when bisected laterally, and is secured in such position by means of a piu, so driven as not to project above the surface of the stop.

At the other end of the bar asimilar stop is set'in the groove, and secured in like manner.

The adjacent bar is provided with a groove similar nin all respects to that of the former-described bar,

which groove is provided at one end with a device consisting of a double diagonal cross, and a section of such cross bisected laterally, united in one piece, having the stop and lower part of the double cross embedded in the. groove, and secured by a pin, at a point opposite the end of the first-described groove, at the point where the stop is fixed therein. The pin securing said device is so arranged as not to project above its surface.

It is evident from the above that any number of bars may be used in combination.

In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe and illustrate its operation.

The following is a description of the drawings:

Figure 1 represents the lateral surfaces of two adjacent bars, A and B.

g The operation of attaching the bars and using the invention is described as follows:

Remove the stop c at the point z by drawing the pin ein the bar B; superpose 'the barA in such manner as that the grooves come exactly opposite each other; slide the bar A, thus4 placed towards the cross d, in such manner as to cause the cross of the device x to fit into the groove n, then slide the bar Atowards the stop c', at the point s, replace andaix the stop c. At the point z insert the pin c. The attachment is thus complete, and any number of bars may be thus joined.

The cross al operatei as a slide,

moving in the grooves m, and also as a means of attachment to `hold the bars together.

This is due to its peculiar construction, and its tting in the grooves fm, and being embedded and s ecured in the groove n.

The stop c', at the point z, prevents the bars separating or from extending in wrong direction.

The stop c, at the point s,`serves to regulate the length ofthe extension, which, in tig. l, is shown bythe distance between the red lines o and p.

lhe pin o, as used in securing the stops, cross, and combined cross and stop, is so tbrnied and driven as to present no impediment to the surface passing overit.

It is well known that double crosses and grooves have been used by others, and I do not claim them in this application; but
