HARRISON B. WALTER, OF DANVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, T
ALREADY BOX COMPANY, OF DANVILLE, ILLINOIS.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 16, iboe.
Application filed April 24, 1908. Serial No. 428,961.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAimrsoN B. WALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Vermillion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in boxes, and the object is to provide a box which can be made of any heavy paper board, which is creased at certain predetermined intervals for forming the sides of the box, and the ends of the box are formed from flaps which are connected to the sides of the box. The ends of these flaps are preferably held by suitable securing means which are so connected to the end flaps that they can be detached after the box is collapsed.
Another object is to have the ends of the box so connected at the sides that a recess is formed whereby the box can be easily handled.
The invention still further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the box before it is folded;,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 4 is an end view; and Fig. 5 is a modification. A, represents the paper or straw board mat which is creased at intervals as at 1, 1, which'is folded together and connected as at 2. The end . flaps 3, 3 are adapted to be connected to the inner sides of the box as at 4 by some adhesive material. The flaps 3 are creased as :at 5, whereby the ends of the fia s are capable of extending across the en s of the box a short distance beyond the center. The flaps are all provided with openin s 6, 6, excepting one flap at each end of t e box which is rovided with a pin 7. When the box is fol ed for use, the a having the pin 7 is brought into osition, an the openings 6, 6 in the other aps are placed over the pin. After all the flaps have een placed over the pin, a collar 8 is secured to the pin in any suitable manner, thereby making a solid box. In having the ends raised by the flaps 3 being bent down against the sides of the box and then outwardly to form the ends, it gives additional strength to the box, as the paper is doubled andprotects the contents of the box from damage when the ends are crushed in transit or in any other manner. The raised ends also afford a means for easily handling the boxes as they can be grasped by the ends and a firm grip obtained.
These boxes are adapted to be used for packing cartons, candy, crackers, and like, and the ends on the body portion of the box may be made of any suitable material. These boxes maybe shipped to different points in a very small compass, as the body portion can be folded along the creases and the end flaps be folded inwardly so that the entire box will take very little space, and when it is desired to use a box it can be very readily assembled.
In the form shown in Fig. 5, the ends of box by staples orrivets 9.
It is evident that more or less slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several arts described without departing from t e s irit and scope of my invention, and hence do not wis 1 struction herein set forth, but:
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a.
A box comprising sides, independent end flaps being bent, and said bent ortions connected to the sides of the ox forming recesses, said end flaps having openings formed therein, a pin connected to one of the end flaps adapted to pass throu h the'openings in the end flaps, and a co lar received on the pin for locking the fla s together.
In testimony whereof I a x my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRISON B. WALTER.
