j gr I /0 r Witnesses HARRY T. MCOUNE, OF BRADDOGK, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHALK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
Application filed March 31, 1908. Serial No. 424,387.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY T. MGCUNE, a citizen-of the. United States of America, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to chalk-holders, particularly designed for billiard and pool tables, and the primary object of my invention' is to provide a novel holder for chalk that canbe suitably suspended for convenient use, and from which the chalk cannot be surreptitiously removed.
Another object'of this invention is to provide a chalk holder that will protect the fin-.
ers of a hand, while the tip of a due is bemg chalked. I
A further object of this invention is to provide a chalk holder adapted to. be attached to a billiard or pool table, the holder being protected whereby the same will not injure a table when allowed to strike the same. I
With the above. and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to .be presently de scribed and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims. In the drawings:Figure l is a side elevation of my chalk holder, Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the holder, Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the holder, illustrating a slight modification, Fig. 5 is an elevation of a pin used in connection with the holder, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a piece. of chalk, partly broken away and partly in section.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a cylindrical metallic casing for a cylindrical piece ofchalk 2. The casing 1 is formed with a radially disposed housing 3 for a coil spring 4, said spring bearing upon the head 5 of a pin 6. This pin is adapted to engage in circumferentially arranged grooves 7 provided therefor in the chalk 2, and prevent the chalk from being removed from the holder.
In order that the pin 6 can be elevated to permit of the chalk 2 being placedin the cas- J mg 1, I provide the head 5 of the in wit-h an opening. Sadapt'ed to aline wit oppositely disposed openings 9 formed in the housing 3. Before the chalk is placed in the casing 1, the finger can be inserted therein, and the pin 6 raised, at which time a pin 10 can be inserted in one of the openings 9 to engage in the opening 8 of the head 5, and
hold the pin in an elevated position. When the chalk has been placed in-the casing 1, the pin 10 can be withdrawn allowing the spring 4 to force the pin 6 downwardly into one of the grooves 7 of the chalk.
The holder is adapted'to be attached to a billiard or pool table by a cable or chain 11, and to prevent the casing l and the housing 3 from injuring the table when struck by the holder, I provide the casing 1 with a covering 12 of-resilient material, as rubber. and the housing 3 with a similar covering 13, said covering having openings '14 formed therein to aline with the openings 90f the housing 3, also an opening 15 for the cable or chain 11.
The circumferentially arranged groove 7 permits of the chalk 2 beingv partially rotated in the casing, and prevents longitudinal displacement of the chalk when the pin 6 engages in either of said grooves.
It is apparent that the chalk will have to be entirely used or broken. out of the holder in order to remove the same.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, the cable or chain 11 is attached to an eye in the end of the housing, while in Fig. 4 the chain or cable ,is-passed-through the end of the housing. Ijreserve the right to use either mode of fastening the chain or cable.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. In ,a chalk holder, "the combination of a casing adapted to receive the chalk, a housin carried by said casing, a spring presse pin arranged insaid housing for engaging in the chalk, a cable or chain attached to said housing, a resilient covering fitting upon said casing a resilient covering fitting upon saidhousing, and a pin for engaging 1n said housing and holding said spring-pressed pin in an elevated osition, while the chalk is placed within said casing.
2. In a chalk holder, the combination of a casing adapted to receive the chalk, a housing carried by said casing, a spring pressed pin arranged in said housing for engagin the chalk, a cable or chain attached to sai housing, a resilient covering fitting upon said casing, a resilient covering fitting upon said housing, and means for engaging in said housing and holding said pin in an elevated position, while the chalk'is placed within said casing.
3-5. In a chalk holder, the combination of a casing, adapted to receive the chalk, a housing carried by said casing, a spring pressed pin arranged in said housing and adapted to engage in the chalk, a covering for said casing, a covering for said housing, and a chain or cable attached to said holder.
. l. In a chalk holder, the combination of a casing adapted to receive the chalk, a housing carried by said casing, a spring pressed
