Description
KATHERINE OK-NE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
. DUPLIGATING-MACHIN'E.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 13, 1908.
Application led lay 28, 190B. Ierial No. 435,497.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KA'rnnmNE OKANE, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Duplicating Machines, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My improvement. is particularly applicable to a machine of the type known commercially as the multigraph, coniprisin'g a rotary cylinder having a series of undercut. channels in its perimeter extending parallel. with its axis to receive complementary shaped flanged type which said cylinder presents in opposition to a plane reciprocatory platen. As ordinarily constructed, the only ineens with which suoli a machine is provided for underscoring the word imprints consists of ty e fitted to the channels and havino' dash aces. Consequently, it is impossibile to make with such machines imprints'wherein single spaced lines of words are underscored, because the word lines mustr be double spaced to afford a channel between. them to receive said underscore type.
Therefore, it is an object of my invention t. provide such a machine with means for malerscoring single spaced lines of words, and, the form of my invention hereinafter described comprises a rotary cylinder provided with channels extending 1n its perimeter parallel with its axis; flanged type fitted in said channel in single spaced relation, and an underscore rule strip held by and between said flanged type in said channels, independently o said cylinder. I prefer to Vform said underscore strips of resilient sheet metal, such as spring steel which is initially curved, so that when straightened by engagement between the type in the cylinder such strips frictionally engage said type.
My invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
In the drawings; Figure I, is a side elevation of a rotary printing cylinder and rcciprocatory plane platen, such as are em- )loyed in a machine of the type specified. ,Fig II, is a fragmentary .-plan view of a. portion of said cylinder with letter-type and underscorestrips set therein. Fig! III, is an end view f the elements shown in Fig. II. Fig, IV, s a perspective view of a detached underscore type strip, Fig. V, is a side view i of one of the underscore type of ordinary construction, having flanges to lengage the i channels in the cylinder.
I n said drawings; tire-rotary printing cylinder l, has the undercut channelsQ, extending in its perimeter parallel with its axis, and, each type 3,4, and 5, is provided with flangesv, complementzuy to and fitted in said channels.v When said flanged type are fitted in single spaced relation as'shown in tending between them parallel with the axis of the cylinder 1, and of such width as to receive underscore strips S. However, it may be observed that said strips do not enter said channels 2, in the printingy drum, or enga-ge the latter, but are maintained type high by the ridges on said printinglrum by frictional eng-agement between the flanged type which are engaged in said channels.
As indicated in Fig. IV, a strip S, formed of springsteel may Iie initially curved but such a ciirved Yst-rip is straightened when fitted between the flanged type as shown in Iiig. II.
fi-ben the type have been assembled in the cylindrical printing drum I, in the desired relation, the inked ribbon 12, is drawn over the typeifaces and secured by connection with the roillers 13 and 14, which are mounted in said cyiinder as indicated in Fig. I, so that when a sheet of paper is interposed between the platen and said cylinder, and said cylinder' turned until the platen is shiftedto the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. I, said sheet is imprintcd with an imprint made from said type through said inked ribbon and the words in single spaced relation are underscored Without the employment of the ordinary underscore type 5, shown in Fig. V. Although said flexible underscore st-r1ps 8, ma be emplo ed to underscore letter type w ich are 1n t ouble spaced relation, in which case they may be held between the. lett-er ty e 3, and blank type 4, as shown in Fig. I it is more convenient to employ the ordinary underscore type 5, when the matter is set in double spaced relation. i v
I do not desire to limit myself to the preciso details of construction and arrangement alovedescribed, as it is obvious that various between said channels 2, and are'held solely4 Figs. II, and III, there are interstices 7, ex-
type fitted in said channels; and, an under Ascore strip held by. and between the type, in-
modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention, as defined in the appended claims. I claim 1. In a duplicating machine; the combination with a rotary printing eddrum having a plurality ofundercut cham; l s in its periphery; of type having an'ges fitted 1n said channels; and, an underscb're strip held between said Banged type, independently of said drum.
2. In a duplicating machine, the combination with a rotar printing drum having a plurality of .un ercut channels extending parallel with its axis in its periphery; of
dependently 'of said drum.
3. In a duplicating machine, the combinai tin with a' rota printing drum having a plurality of ,un ercut channels extending parallel Vwith its axis in its periphery; of type havinganges fitted in said "channels in single spaced relation; and an underscore rule strip held between said flanged type, independently o f said drum. 4. In avduplicating maehine, the combination with a rota printing drum; having a plurality of un ercut channels extending parallel with its axis in its periphery; of
type having flanges fitted in said channels in single spaced relation; and, a iiexible. resilient underscore rule strip held by and between said flanged type, independently of said drum.
5. In a duplicating machine, the combination with a rotary printing drum; of type carried'by said drum; an underscore rule strip held by and between said type; and, means distinct from said type maintaining said rule type high.
6. In a duplicating machinegthe combina- 'tion with a rotary printing drum; of type carried by said drum; an underscore rule strip held by and between said type; and,
vmeans vdistinct from said type maintaining' said rule type high, comprising a ridge on said drum.
y7. In a duplicating machine, the combination with a rotary printing drum; of type carried'by said drum; an'undcrscore rule strip' held' by and vbetween said type; and, means distinct from said type maintaining said rule type, high, comprising a ridge on Said drum extending parallel with said strip. 'In Vtestimony whereof-'I have hereunto signed my name at Philadelphia, Pennsyl Y Vania, this ninthday of May,- 1908.
