To all whom 'it may concern.' Be it known that4 I, JOHN WHI'IAKER, ,a citizen' of the United States, and a resident yof North Wales, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Printing Devices, of which the following is a specification. '1
My invention relates to printing devices oi the character employed for marking or printing checks, drafts and similar paper, with indicia, usually and preferably in indelible ink, representing the amount for which the check, draft &c., is drawn, or the amount which the value of the check or other paper should not exceed.
My invention comprises certain improvements in structures of this general character in which provisionis made for relatively movin' a printing drum or cylinder having lineso type with abrading or cutting faces, with respect to an impression laten which has an abrading or cutting ace complemental to the type; means being provided to ink said type` so that simultaneously with the cutting Aor abrading of the paper, ink will be applied thereto. While the printing drum or cylinder and platen may be relatively movable, one with respect to the other, the platen is preferably disposed in a fixed position; being carried by the base of the apparatus in the manner hereinafter described.

This shaft or spindle 8 is mounted eccentrically in ball bearing rings 10 journaled in apertureslly formed in the sides of the frame 1, and the printin drum or cylinder is under the control of aghandle 12 suitably connected to said rings, as shown in Fig. 5. It will be understood .therefore that movement of the handle to cause the cylinder to effect the printing operation will not -only move the cylinder downwardly for contact of one of the type lines carried therebywith an impression platen 13 cooperating t erewith, but will also impart a slight rotative movement to such printing drum due to its eccentric mounting; the position ofthe bearing rings 10 being such that proper contact of the line of type desired will be made with the platen 13 at the completion of the downward stroke of the operating handle.
For the purpose of returning the cylinder and its operating handle to the normal inactive position, I may provide a helically coiled spring 15 at one side of the frame, one end of which sprin is connected to the printing cylinder, whi e its opposite end may be caught under a rod or bar 16 extendingacross the frame 1 at the rear of the same.

As the platen is provided. with cutting or piercing points or projections coperating with complementally recessed type faces on the drum or cylinder, it is necessary to insure registry of the respective impression faces each tiniethey are brought into engagement.
.F or this purpose, in the type of machine i which I have illustrated, the printing drum has an endwise or lateral movement imparted thereto when swung by the operating handle to the operative position, which movement may be effected in the following manner:
lVith the form of machine illustrated, the platen is in relatively fixed position with respect to the printing cylinder,` and one end of the latter is provided twith projections or teeth 20 forming V-shaped grooves 21 between them, which grooves are beveled outwardly with respect to the cylinder and dis osed tangentially to the axis of the c lin( er. For cooperation with the grooves etween these teeth, I provide a xed projection 22- on the side wall of the frame which is in such position with respect to the printing cylinder as to be clear of the same when the latter is in the raised non-printing position free to rotate for setting purposes; such projection engaging one of the grooves 21 at the end of -the cylinder upon depression of the latter by the operation of the handle 12.

I claim:
l. The combination in a printin aparatus, of a platenhaving a series o *pro- Jetions, the pro]ect1ons o n one slde of the platen being of a greater size than those on the other side; a type cylinder having a series of type faces thereon; eccentrics on which the type cylinder is mounted; and means for turning the eccentrics so that the cylinder will approach the platen, the faces of the typeof the cylinder having indentations corresponding to the projections of the platen and so arranged that as the cylinder approaches the platen the large projections of the laten will engage thetype cylinder in adli'ance of the smaller projections.
2. In a printing apparatus, the combination of a frame havin a base; a platen carried by said base, sald platen having two series of curved grooves, one series crossing the other and forming diamond-shaped cutting points, the points at one side of the platen being smaller than those at the o posite side; a printing drum mounted 1n said frame and having a plurality of lines of type faces for engagement with said platen, said type faces having recesses for registry with the cutting points; and means for bringing the type lines of the printing drum into coperating relation with the platen.
