To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, ANDREW H. RUSSELL, lieutenant-colonel United States Army, and a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing. Devices for Hats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to packing devices for hats, and the object of my invention is to produce such a device which shall be cheap to manufacture, simple in construction and effective for the purpose intended.

To these ends my invention consists in a novel panel plate or board, suitably hollowed out, and curved to fit the contour ofthe hat when ready for packing away, all as more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.

1, indicates the base of my panel or plate; 2, a hole through thev same; and 4, side flanges rising rom the base 1. These flanges are provided with the tapered ends 3, and the hollowed out curved portions 5, as shown. Said base is also provided at diametrically opposite ends with the beveled off, or chamfered surfaces 6, on its upper face; and straps or other fastening means 7 and 7 may be attached in any suitable position. Preferably this fastening means passes entirely around the panel, as shown, so as to not only hold the hat in position, but also any artlcles that may be placed in the hole 2.

in all The c'urved hollowed out portions 5, of the flanges 4, are of such a shape and dimensions as to snugly receive these rim portions 9, of the hat. And the raised curved portions 9, of the base, fit and support the under curved surfaces of the hats brim on the sides, so that the upper face of the base including the chamfered surfaces 6, conforms to the under curvature of the brim throughout its whole extent, and therefore snugly supports it at every point when any crushing pressures are applied thereto, as plainly shown in Fig. 3. The lian es 4, are of such a height as to fully protect t e upper brim portions 9, of the hat when in its collapsed condition. fThe strap or other fastenings 7, passes from one flange to the other.

The hole 2, is for the purpose of stowing away handkerchiefs, gloves, cravats etc., when the hat is packed in my panel or board, and the strap 7 passes under the base and across the hole 2, in order to hold any articles that may be placed in said hole.

lVhen the hat is to be packed away, the same may be first collapsed, and its brim snugly inserted between the flanges 4, and into the grooves 5, when the under surface of said brim will be firmly supported on the top face of the base 1, and the strap 7, may now be secured over the whole. Vhen hats are ordinarily packed away, without protection in trunks or dress suit cases, the brim portions are quite easily bent out of shape, since they are the least protected; and when so bent, they immediately cause the hat to look worn and unsightly. It` is therefore important that said portions be firmly supported, as by the indicated form of the upper face of the base, so that no matter how much crushing said brims may receive from clothes or other articles, they cannot be bent out of shape.

My anel, plate or board, may be made of any suitable shape or material, but I prefer to mold the same out of papier-mch, and it may be used with or without the straps 7 and 7. My packing device will be found very convenient, without the need of a protecting box, for packing hats in dress suit or other cases, where they will occupy a very small space. It will also be found useful in stowing crushed hats away in trunks, or in any other receptacle which is already full, owing to the fact that my board will prevent the crushing effect of other articles from damaging the hat. It also useful in carryingV the hat as a bundle, either ina or wrapped up.

I do not limit myself, as above stated, to the exact details of construction shown, since the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What I claim is l. A packing panel for a hat, consisting of an integral plate provided with a base portion and anges rising from said base portion, having the curves 5, on the inside to fit the brim of the hat, and extending suiiiciently above said portion to protect said brim, substantially as described.

A packing device for a hat, consisting of a flat plate provided with a base portion having the inclined chamfered surfaces 6, at diametrically opposite sides, and flanges rising from said base having inside curved portions, adapted to lit the brim of the hat, and extending upwardly from said base a distance sufficient to protect said brim, substantially as described.

A packing device for a collapsible hat consisting of a plate having a base portion provided with a hole adapted to receive a handkerchief, and flanges rising from said base portion, having the curves 5, on the inside to fit the brim of the hat, and extending suiliciently above said base portion to protect said brim, substantially as described.

A packing device for a crushed hat, consisting of a single plate like body provided with a base portion having inclined chamfered surfaces 6, at diametrically opposite ends ,flanges rising from said base having inside curved portions, adapted to fit the Y brim ofthe'hat, and the curved portions 9,

. a fastening means adapted to pass over said hat, substantially as described.

6. A packing device for a collapsible hat, consisting of a plate provided with va base portion having a hole therethrough for the reception of small articles; inclined surfaces and hollowed out flanges adapted to snugly fit the entire under surface of the brim of a hat; and a strap passing from one flange to the other across said hat, substantially as described.

7. A packing device for a collapsible hat, consisting of an oval shaped plate provided with a base portion having a hole therethrough for the reception of small articles; inclined surfaces and hollowed out flanges adapted to fit the entire under surface of the brim of the hat; and straps passing from one ange to the other across said hat and underneath said base portion, substantially as described.
