Description

PATENTED JULY 21, 1908.
J; N. GASSBTT. CLOTHES LINE SUPPORTER.
APPLICATION FILED OUT. 5, 1906 tions.
JOHN N. GASSE'IT, LAURIN, MONTANA.
GLOTHE S-LINE SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1968.
Application filed October 5, 1906. Serial No. 337,600.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. GAssETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laurin, in the county of Madison and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Line Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clothes lines and more particularly to clothes line supports, the object being to provide an ,adjustable support for the clothes that can be easily and quickly adjusted vertically so that the line can be lowered when placing clothes thereon.
' With this object in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification:Figure 1 is a perspective view'of posts showing my improved support secured thereto with a clothes line and pins arranged thereon. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of a post and guide-bracket showing the reel in sec- Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the reel. Fig. 4 is a detail side view of a portion of a post and bracket showing one of the supporting members in section. Fig. 5' is an inverted plan view of one of the supporting members. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of a modified form of bracket adapted to be used on wooden posts.
Referring to the drawing A, B and O indicate the ordinary square posts adapted to be secured in the ground in any suitable manner, while I have shown three posts, it can of course be understood that any number of osts can be used with the same result. A racket D. is secured to one side of each post by bolts passing through the apertured ends D. The outer face of the vertical .member of each bracket is provided with a series of notches D. A block E provided with an opening E is mounted on the vertical notched member of the post A, having a recess formed in its under face, in which is mounted a dog F adapted to be held into engagement with the notches D by a coilspring F, so that it can be readily adjusted up and down when desired.
The end of the block is bifurcated in which is arranged a reel G on a crank shaft G, which is mounted on bearings formed in the side of the bifurcation. A cog-wheel H is fixed to the shaft adapted to be engaged by a pawl H pivoted to one side of the block so as to prevent the same from turning backward; Duplicate blocks I provided with openings I are mounted on the notched vertical member of the members secured to the posts B and C having recesses formed in their under sides in which are mounted dogs I which are held into engagement with the notches of the brackets by a coil-spring I The ends of the blocks I are bifurcated in which are mounted grooved pulleys I over which a clothes-line J is adapted to pass, one end of which is connected to an apertured lug E projecting from one side of the block E and the other end to the reel G, so that by turning the crank-shaft G, the line can be tightened as desired.
In the modification shown in Fi 6 I have shown a bracket K provided wit grooved ends adapted to fit over the post.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have provided very novel clothes line supports that can be readily lowered so that the clothes can be placed thereon and raised and tightened so that the clothes will be held off the ground.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the kind described, the combination with posts, of notched brackets secured to said posts, blocks mounted on said brackets and provided with spring-actuated dogs, means carried by said blocks for supporting a clothes line, and means for drawing said line taut.
JOHN N. GASSETT.
