WIRE-CLAMP.
Application filed January 4, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN V. HosAox, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ackson Center, in the county of Mercer, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVire-Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful wire clamp adapted to be used while stretching wire.
The object of my invention is to provide a light, efficient, sim ly constructed wire clamp adapted to rea ily receive a wire or wire strand and my invention comprises the combination of certain instrumentalities as will be described more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 1 a side elevation of a wire clamp embodying my invention showing a piece of wire as being clamped. Fig. 2 is a top view of my wire clamp, Fig. 3 a rear end view, Figs. 4 and 5 are detail perspective views of elements of the clamp, while, Fig. 6 is a view in line 6 of Fig. 1.
In constructing wire fences, a tool is highly desired by means of which the wire or wire strand may be clamped in such a manner that the strand need not be cut, the construction permitting the clamp to be anchored to a suitable post while the wire is being stretched.
In carrying out the aim of my invention I provide a Wire clamp comprising a base plate 1 as shown in Fig. 2 having a hook opening 2 and a flange 3 projected upward from one edge of the base 1. As shown in Fig. 1 the flange is inclined rearwardly that is, towards the end opposite the securing or hook opening 2.
To the upper edge of the base 1 is secured a lug 4 which has its gripping face channeled and roughened or serratec as shown in Fig. 1 to more firmly grasp the wire fence strand 0c.
Positioned approximately midway of its height and projected over the base 1, is a sup orting pin 6 which is slightly to the rear of t e gripping lug 4. Pivotally held upon this supporting pin 6 is an approximately L- Specification of Letters Patent.

shaped gripping lever 7 which has a bearing 6 and the projectin head 9 and face 10 which is also channeled and roughened or serrated, but curved in the direction opposite to the semi-cylindrical gripping surface of the lug 4. To the end of this gripping lever 7 is secured a pin 12 passing through the eye 7 which pivotally su ports two links 13, these links in turn at tieir upper ends being fastened to a pin 14 passing through the car 15 of the head 16 of the operating lever 17 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. It will be noticed that the operating lever 17 extends in the direction opposite to the L- shaped gripping lever. Now the instrumentalities are so arranged that when an ordinary fence wire is placed upon the channeled gri ping lug 4, the operating lever 17 may be depressed so as to firmly force the projecting gripping head 9 against the fence wire to firmly impinge the fence wire between the gripping face 10 and the gripping face 5 of the lu 4 as shown in Fig. 1. In this closed condition of the clamp the upper pin 14 uniting the links 13 to the head of the operating lever is a little to one side of the supporting pin 15 so that the links 13 which are held under strain have a tendency to force the operating lever into its downwardly extending locked position 1. The lever 17 in its closed position rests upon the head 6, as shown. T 0 release the wire a; the lever 17 is carried upward which will carry the gripping head 9 rearward to permit the instant release of the wire. As the base 1 is projected from the lever supporting flange 3, this clamp may be secured to a wire strand at any oint, the parts all being made sufficient y strong to withstand the required strain.
