Description

A. K. YOUNG.
0L ES LINE H0 D R. APPL ION FILED FEB. 906.
PATENTED AUG. 7, 1906.
ALEXANDER K. YOUNG, OF GREENSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOTHES-LINE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 7, 1906.
Application filed February 27,1906. Serial No. 303,182.
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, ALEXANDER K. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Greensburg, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clothes-line holders; and the invention has for its primary object to provide novel means for detachably connecting a clothes-line to a suitable support without the use of hooks, nails, or the tying of the end of a clothes-line.
Another object of this invention is to provide a clothes-line holder to which a line may be easily and quickly connected and held in engagement therewith while the line is being used.
A further object of this invention is to provide a clothes-line holder which will be extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is used.
The detail construction of my improved clothes-line holder will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and, referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved clothes-line holder as secured to a suitable support. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the supporting-bracket detached and on a smaller scale. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the gripping-lever detached from the supportingbracket and on a reduced scale. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
To put my invention into practice, I construct my improved clothes-line holder of a supporting-bracket and a gripping-lever, said bracket and lever being preferably made of strong and durable metal. The supportingbracket consists of a plate 1, having apertures formed therein whereby it may be secured to a post or the like support 8 by screws 2 or equivalent securing means. The supporting-bracket carries an angularly-disposed line-supporting extension 4 upon its upper end, while adjacent to its lower end the bracket is provided with an outwardly-extending gripping-lug 5, having a serrated or toothed surface 6. The sides of the bracket intermediate the extension 4 and the lug 5 are provided with outwardly-extending pierced arms 7 7.
The gripping-lever 8 is pivotally mounted between the arms 7 7 by a pin 9, while the upper end of said lever is bifurcated, as at 10, and provided with a roller 11. ,The lower end of the gripping-lever has its lower face provided with a serrated or toothed grippingsurface 12, said surface being opposed to the gripping-surface 6 of the lug 5.
To-secure the end of a clothes-line 14 to my improved holder, the end of the line is passed over the roller 11 downwardly between the arms 7 7 and in front of the gripping-surface 6 of the lug 5. When the line 14 is drawn taut, the upper end of the grippinglever 8 is pulled outwardly, while the gripping-surface 12 of the lower end is adapted to press the line 14 and firmly hold the same between the gripping- surfaces 6 and 12. In some instances the line 14 may be of a greater length than is necessary, and for this reason I have provided the line-supporting extension 4, which is adapted to support that portion of a line not being used, the line being suspended from the extension.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in a lineholder, of a supporting-bracket provided on its outer face near the lower end thereof with a right-angularly-extending lug having a serrated outer face, a pair of arms extending forwardlyfrom the supporting-bracket above the serrated lug, a gripping-lever having recessed side faces to receive the outer ends of said arms, the gripping-lever being pivoted between said arms, said gripping-lever having a serrated gripping-face at its lower end, and hav ing a bifurcated upper end, a roller mounted in said bifurcated upper end, and a line-holding extension carried by the supportingbracket at its upper end and projecting forwardly at an angle therefrom, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER K. YOUNG.
