'Dayton, in the county ofMontgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Driving Mechanism for Cashegisters, of which I declare the follfiowing to be a full, clear, and exact descripion.
This invention relates to cash registers,- and has for its object to provide an im proved operating devicefor the same.
In establishments where the register is in almost constant or. in frequent use, the contlnued operation becomes tiresome to the operator, and itis therefore desirable to pro-.

Electric motors have been heretofore used in this connection, but in many establishments the electric current necessitated for their operation is not to be had. In many such places, however,'water power is available, and this invention is art1cularly designed to beused in estab ishments of that class.

Described in generalterms, the machine comprises a series of keys 10 pivoted on a shaft 11 and arranged at the rear ends to 0p? erate the usual ke coupler 12. A pin 32" on the machine frame serves to swing the lever 29 laterally as it moves u wardly, inasmuch as the pin is in the path of the cut away portion or cam notch 32 on the lever. When the pin 30 rides off the high edge of cam 31, lever 29 will drop to the position shown in Fig. 3, and will thereby give key a tap to assist in its own return to normal position under control of its spring 28. A spring 33 assists in the return of lever 29 to its normal position. 'The peculiar shape of the high part of cam 31, as shown in Fig. 5, is required by the fact that this cam oscillates and does not always move in the same direction. When the pin 30 dro s from the high edge of the cam 31 it would e impossible to reversely rotate the cam, unless the cut-away portion, as shown in this figure, was rovided.
W iile the form of mechanism here shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfil the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of embodiment herein disclosed, for it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
For convenience in illustration I have shown my invention as applied to a well known type of machine in which a coupler is used to provide for the simultaneous operation of a number of keys. The invention however is not limited to use with this type of machine nor to any type of machine in which the power is applied through key levers, but may equally well be used with many other types of machines such, for ex ample as those in which the keys act as stops for movable parts, or in which the keys release parts from'a holding device, or in fact to any machine which is adapted to perform the functions of a cash register.
"hat is claimed is as follows;
1. In a cash register, the combination with a main operating member, of a motor for moving same, a key controlling the motor, a lever for restoring the key to normal position, a pinion driven by said motor, and a cam moved by said pinion and constructed to cause engagement of said key and lever.
2. In an accounting machine, the combi nation with a movable member, of an oscillating device for operating said member, and means for control 'ng said oscillating device comprising a link connected to said device, a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder connected to said link, a key, and a valve operated by said key and controlling the ingress and egress of fluid to said cylinder.
3. In an accounting device, the combination with an operating mechanism, of a motor for operating same, a movable key for controlling said motor, and means for return ing the key to normal position comprising an oscillatory shaft, a cam on said shaft having a beveled face, a lever having a cam surface and a pin engaging said beveled cam, said lever engaging said key.
4. In an accounting device, the combination with a key of means for restoring said key to normal, comprising a lever pivoted to swin in two directions, spn'n s for swinging said Iever, a cam for moving t e lever in one direction anda pin for moving the lever in another direction.
5. In an accounting device, the combination with a plurality of keys, a key coupler common thereto, a lever connected to said coupler, a cam for operating said lever, and a fluid operated motor for operating said cam, said motor comprising a cylinder, a piston therein, and a valve controlling the ingress and egress of fluid to said cylinder.
