l PUMP-REGULATING` MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,332, dated August 25, 1903.
Application ledMarch 28 1902 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WORTHY CHANNING BUCKNAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pump-Regulating Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide means for varying the delivery of a pumpl while it is in operation, so that it may supply fluid according to the varying demands upon it. My pump is especially designed for feeding the water to the boiler of a steam-automobile, and the adjustable delivery, accomplished by the varying the stroke of the pump, obviates the necessity of by-pass valves to prevent the undue feeding of the boiler.
To this end the invention consists of a pump, mechanism for driving it, and means for varying the stroke of the pump while it is in operation. The particular embodiment of this, hereinafter shown and described, is also comprehended within my invention.
The drawings clearly illustrate VVmy invention as applied to a pump suitable for automobile use, Figure l being a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a bottom plan.
In the drawings, A A represent a pair of pumps operated by the reciprocation of the common piston-rod B, which passes into the pump-chambers through stuffing-boxes C C,
or frame D. The rod B, whose reciprocation causes the pumping action, has a collar b, from which project pins b'. These pins take into the bifurcated ends of the arms E, Secured to a rock-shaft F. On the outer end of the shaft is secured the lever G, the bifurcated end g of which is adapted to take around a pin (not shown) from some reciprocating part of the machinery-as theoross-head Of the engine. The Oscillation of vthe lever G thus caused operates thepump. Now I journal the rook-shaft F in a pair of levers H and H', which are secured to a shaft-K, journaled serial No. 100,452. (No man.)
in the depending end d of the yoke-frame D. A
rook-shaft F, and thusvarying theI stroke of the pump.,
In operation when the engine isA running,-
Oscillating the lever Gand driving the pump,
if too much water is being delivered to the boiler the handle Nis turned in the direction to lower the nut J, thus bringing the rockshaft F nearer the pins b and shortening the plished during the runningof the vehicle, as
circumstances require.
I claim- 1. In combination, a frame, a pair of alined pumps carried thereby, a common piston-rod for said pumps, a pair of links pivoted to said frame, a rock-shaft carried by the other ends of said links, one of said links being extended in the opposite `direction from its pivot, thereby forming a lever, means engaging said lever at the end thereof for shifting it to change the position of said rock-shaft, an arm carried by the rock-shaft and movably engaging a pin carried by the piston, and another arm carried by the rock-shaft for actuating the arm first mentioned, substantially as described.
2. In combination, aframe, a pair of alined pumps carried thereby, a common piston-rod for said pumps, a pair of links pivoted to said frame, a rock-shaft carried by the other ends of said links, one'of said links being extended by forming a lever, a nut loosely carried by the end thereof and provided with a threaded 2 @smeg In testimony whereof I hereunto ax my opening, zt soew rotatably mounted, for ensglmturo in the presence of two witnesses.
gagiug said opening iu said nut, an arm ozu"- l'ied b f the rook-shaft mld movztbl Y engmffun x 1 t t pin zuried by the piston, and zuothr WORUIY ('UANMM' LUCKNAM rigid with said rook-Shaft for actuating' the \Vtuesses:
zum rst mentioned, substantially as de- HENRY MEANS,
scribed. J. N. MEANS.
