Description

wwesaesse-W CYRUS S-ALADEE, OF CIRCLEVILLE, OIIIO.
Latem Pawn: No. 89,507, dated April 27, '1889.
mnovnmm' m moras.
mi Iobedull referred to iu thus Letters Patent und making pu# o! th son.
Aville, in the oonnty of Ficknway, ond Stato oi Ohio,
have invented certain new and usoiul Improvements in Ogni-Bearing or AdvertisingEnvelopes; and I do hemby decline that the' following is a fnll, clear, and.
exact description thereof, reference heilig had tothe iwconnmnylng drawings,:nnd to tho letters of reference marked thereon, which orni a part of this specificit- The nat-nre of my lnlvcntloneonslsts in improvements on oord-bearing or advertising envelopes, by
printing the card of t e,writer on a seperate piene of paper lmm `that of wh oh the envelope is made, and having the under side of the piece of paper bearing the card, coated with anindhesivo substance, ond one ond. of Lahout n queman-ol n inoh ,in length, aimnst severe from the rest of thc card by pcriomtlons.
This nearly severed end is to be made i'nst to the envelope, and the other end of the card is to be leiinto a slit in the envelope, and serve to assist in holding the card until the envelope isdelivcred to the corrcspolrdent. The eon'eslmndent then teurs oil the card at tine perl forations, and i'ustens or mncllnges the sinne bn tho face of the envelope beating the answer di'. the wrrespondent, and the cardtheu serves to direct the cnvev lope without the possibility of a. mistake being made in I the address.
To enable those skilled iu the art to make and usc lmy invention, I will now proceed to more fully describe its construction and operation.
In the dmwings- A Figure 1 is a. view, showing the envelope with a. slit in it, and the card secured to. the envelope when the writer sends his letter, and
Figure 2 shows the card when torn from the envelope, shown in iig. 1, and secured to envelope, shown in iig.' 2, by mneiloging it thereto.
Figure 3 represents the piece of paper bearing the card ornamented, and
Figure 4 represents the saine card when torn ii'om the envelope, shown in fig. 3, and inneilaged to the envelope, shown in iig. 4, bearing the answer oi' the correspondentI ot' the writer' who sent the envelope, shown in iig. 3.
The envelope A has au incision, a, made in its face, as shown in the drawings, being ofthe same width as the card B.
Ordinarily, I shall make the card B of theplain and neat form shown in iig. 1, or of the ornamental style shown ln fig. 4, in both of which the under sido ofthe card is entirely covered with lnneiloge, or other adhesive substance, and the end b is nearly severed from tho hody oi' the card by perforations, or otherwise.
This end b is secured to the envelope, and the other end oi' the card B is slipped into the incision a, of the envelope A, and the card is, in this manner, secured to the ,letter until it is delivered.
'lhe recipient oi' theletter slips the loose end ofthe card B ont of thev incision a, and teurs the card B ironi its end b, and postes theeaxd Bon the envelope, as shown in figs. 2 and 4.
Instead of having an incision made in the envelope, both ends ol' thecard .l may belprenaredlke the end 6 In gJ, su miti' the ends of the card are. then secured on the face ofthe envelope, and the recipient of' the letter tears the aard from both of its ends that are nearly severed li'omg, instead of tearing it from one.
Among the advailtges my invention possesses over others in the same ciusn; may he mentioned that its siinplieity is snoll as toeimblc its ready usage by any one, however nnlamiliar with its operation, and thccapability oi' thc card heilig highly ornami-,nted by embossing, gilding, or otherwise, and the sure prevention of any mistake in answering a. letter through niisdireetion. f
I. do not confine myself tofs-imply printing the, address ol the writer on the said card, as 1 may iind it convenient to adapt my envelopes to snit the wants of parties of limited correspondence, which l do by leaving the card B blank as to the address, in other respects resembling the card as above described, the writer filling in the address.
l Having thus fnlly described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The card B, serving as an advertisement, and as a snperseription to an answering letter, in combination with the envelope A when formed sepanitr. from thc envelope, und attached to its faee, suhstantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own, i ailix iny signature in presence of two witnesses.
' OYBUS W. SALADEE.
