Be it known that I, EDWIN F. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Check-Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, inA which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a check-book with ,Y the cover open and partly broken away. This invention relates to improvements in check-books, and more particularly to a book adapted to be bound or assembled by unskilled persons. The parts of the present book, including the checks, can be supplied to a bank or the like, the checks not having customers names printed thereon, and the bank can, as may become necessary, have proper numbers of checks from their stock printed by the local printer withthe proper customers name, and the bank itself can thenvbind such checks in the cover and supply the books thus produced to the customer.

My object is to provide a book of the character indicated whichcan be very cheaply and easily constructed and can be assembled without any difficulty whatever by even a most unskilled person, the book when assembled being neat, strong, and durable.

To these ends and also to improve generally upon devices of the character indicated the invention consists in the various matters hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring now more particularly to 4the drawings, it will be seen that the cover comprises front and back cover-boards'l and 2, connected in a well-understood manner by a flexible back 8, the rear or back cover-board 2 having formed thereon a pocket 4., which opens at its inner end adjacent the inner edge of said rear cover-board, such a pocket being well known upon book-covers. AThe backing has front and rear boards 5 and 6, which are connected by a back 7, and these front and rear boards of the backing are provided with openings or perforations 8, the openings in one board alining with those in the otherboard. The sheets of checks 9 are provided along what may be termed their inner edges with openings 10, which correspond to the before-mentioned openings 8 in the backing, so that when a block of checks is inserted between the front and rear boards 5 and 6 of the backing the openings 10 aline with the corresponding openings in the backing, as

illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4.. When the checks filler-board 13, is then pasted to the upper' and lower sides of said iiller-board, then has its two layers pasted together to produce the before-mentioned back 7, and then has its inner layer 15 pasted upon the upper side of the iiller-board 14, the layer 16, which corresponds to said layer 15, being preferably gummed upon its face adjacent the ller-board 14 but Inot pasted thereto when the parts of the book are shipped to the bank, this being illustrated particularly in Fig. 3.

Assuming that a bank has been supplied with the parts of the present book and that it desires to make up a check-book, it is only necessary to insert the block of checks in the backing, pass ordinary paper-fasteners 11 through the openings, and spread the free ends 17 of suoli fasteners upon the lower side of the rear filler-board 14, paste the coveringstrip 16 upon the filler-board 14 over the free ends 17 of the fasteners, and then insert the tongue 12 into the pocket 4L, whereupon a substantial and neat check-book is produced With the check-stubs firmly secured to the backing, the covering-strip 16 preventing any possibility of separation of the paper-fasteners 11 from the backing and the cheeks. can be placed in properly-secured position by even a most unskilled person. Of course when a block of checks has been used Vthe backing, with its attached stubs, is removed from the cover and a new block of checks is secured to a new backing and this new backing is attached to the cover. f

I am aware that minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a check-book, the combination with a cover having a pocket upon one of its coverboards, of a backing including front and rear boards, said rear board'being extended to produce a tongue fitting in said pocket, checks between said front and rear boards of said edges of said backing pasted upon opposite y faces of said filler-boards, said lower fillerboard being' extended to form a tongue received in said pocket, checks between said front and rear boards of said backing, and commercial paper-fasteners extending through said filler-boards and said checks and securing said parts together, the free ends of said fasteners being spread and lying between said lower filler board and the covering-strip pasted upon the under side thereof, whereby said covering-strip secures said fasteners; substantially as described.
