Description

No. 881,117. PATENTBD MAR. 10, 1908.
J. N. GASSETT.
GASTRATING TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED FEB 11 1907 5] vwewl oz ws'eZZ JOHN N. GASSETT, OF LAURIN, MONTANA.
CASTRATING-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 10, 1908.
Application filed February 11, 1907. Serial No. 356,864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. GAssETT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Laurin, in the county of Madison and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Castrating-Tool, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to castrating tools and more particularly to castrating tools especially adapted for castrating lambs, the object being to provide a tool with a pair of grippers and a cutting blade so that either the grippers or the knife can be used, thereby overcoming the difficulties of having to put down one tool and take up another.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts here inafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification:Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved castrating tool showing the blades opened. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my improved tool showing the blades closed. Fig. 3 is an end view of the tool.
In the drawing A indicates a handle pro vided with a curved jaw A having an enlarged serrated gripping portion A A slot A is formed obliquely in the handle in respect to the jaw, in which is pivotedlymounted a knife blade B on a pivot pin B, the blade being held in a closed or opened position by an ordinary spring B secured in the slot A An enlargement A is formed on the handle A adjacent its outer end forming a stop to prevent the hand from slipping down on the blade when using the same. The handle is provided with an enlarged bifurcated portion A in which is pivotedly mounted on a pin C, the reduced enlarged portion of a short handle D which is provided with a curved jaw D, having an enlarged serrated gripping portion D adapted to bear against the en larged portion A of the handle A. A lug is formed on the under side of the handle D on which is arranged a coil spring E, the
lower end of which fits over 2, lug formed on the handle A so that the gripping portion of the jaws will be normally held together.
It will be readily seen that by gripping the handle A and pressing down on the short handle D with the thumb, the jaws can be opened so as to grip the testicles so that the testicles can be readily pulled out.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have provided a very novel castrating tool, so constructed that it can be readily carried in the pocket and one in which the knife or gripper can be used as desired without putting the tool down, thereby saving a great amount of time.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A tool of the kind described comprising a handle having a slot formed in one end and a jaw formed on the other end, a knife blade pivotedly mounted in said slot, a short handle mounted on said handle provided with a jaw at one end, and a spring arranged between said handle for holding said jaws together.
2. A tool of the kind described comprising a handle having a curved jaw at oneend provided with an enlarged serrated gripping portion, said handle having an oblique slot formed therein in respect to the jaw, a stop formed on the handle adjacent its end, a knife blade pivotedly mounted in said slot, an enlarged bifurcated portion formed on said blade, a short handle provided with an enlarged reduced portion pivotedly mounted in said bifurcated portion, a jaw formed on said handle provided with an enlarged serrated gripping portion, and a coil spring arranged between said handles for holding the serrated enlarged gripping portion to gether.
